my dp was made redundant yesterday. he has two weeks of work left and then nothing.

we have 3 ds's and the usual bills that homes tend to have.

not sure what to do. dp has applied for another job,but thats no guarantee (sp?) of getting it.

think i may have to go to the jobcentre to sign on just incase. it feels very weird and scary.

dp seems very sad and im stressed too. couldnt of come at a worse time. booked a summer hol 2 weeks ago and have just done xmas.

think i feel sorry for myself!!

Oh dear - that must be difficult, I'm not surprised you are feeling sorry for yourself. Is your dp entitled to any redundancy pay?
Can you go out to work if necessary (e.g. if your dp does not get this other job)?

Can he freelance while he applies for full time work?

i am a full time student and feel that working towards my qualification is important.also with that and ds's are all under 6, would have alot on my plate if i worked! dp supports that.

yeah he is entitled to some redundancy pay but not more than £500-its dependant on length of service and age.

its very odd

he's a builder and going it alone is a risky business-he would also need the funds to buy equipment-v.expensive and dont want to take out loans at an uncertain time.

Firstly, remain calm. You're going to be ok.

You can get help, even with your mortgage. Check out all your insurance policies, you may be covered for redundancy. If not, you can take a payment holiday.

The Citizens Advice Bureau are your first port of call. They can tell you what you're entitled to, and then claim for everything.

I'm sure that your dp will get another job soon but in the meantime, I'd sign on too if I were you.

If your dp signs on to a few agencies they'll do the searching for him and it'll boost his confidence knowing that there are other jobs available.

oh thanks for that, i hadnt even thought about agencies. i know there a few locally.

so should we go to CAB first? i know in my heart we will be ok but its very strange-dp has been working there since we had ds1 nearly 6 years ago.

scorpio - whereabouts are you based? In London there are lots of companies who send out "handymen". You DP would easily find work with one of these until he gets himself sorted out.

we are all the way down in cornwall, and right at the bottom of that as well!!!

not the easiest place to be when something like this happens!
