Trolls

Throwingshade · 10/01/2016 17:07

I know there was a thread about this just a couple of weeks, but just want to remind us all to think before investing time and emotion - and most importantly personal information and experiences - on threads in Relationships. Especially if it's something triggering for you.

This board is being infiltrated by trolls at the moment.

If the OP is over egged, if the OP is too 'bad' to be true, if it reads like a soap opera with convenient updates every couple of hours to keep people entertained, then it's likely not true!

HQ needs to be more observant towards reported posts maybe.

sije · 11/01/2016 17:06

There's a pathetic arse posting in relationships at the moment, I hope it's a troll otherwise he might be real, which would be worse.

I've already did say that trolling is a problem. When did I say it wasn't? I also said that if HQ believe it's a troll they should zap the thread.

I think if genuine posters are branded trolls then it's the people who do troll that are at fault.

NewYearNewToads · 11/01/2016 18:02

wannabe I would say that's more likely. Who would take clean clothes to a stranger who was on the internet claiming they'd shit themselves? I mean really?!

This might sound stupid but the only reason I bothered to send proof was because I was hurt that the people who tried to help me would think I was lying.

It was a bit pointless however as my thread wasn't reinstated which tbh I was quite glad about because there was a lot of hurtful troll hunting and I regretted starting it in the first place.

I also name changed not long after so I guess those who were on my thread probably still think I was a troll anyway. Oh well.

Some even keep a special phone to help those in need. That's rather odd

flatbellyfella · 11/01/2016 19:22

Another one has appeared , trying to pick up girls.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 11/01/2016 19:59

Anyone else unreasonably annoyed about the stepmother? Loads of reports saying "something's not right", MNHQ sit on their hands until stepmother reveals she's actually the daughter posting a reverse, then MNHQ swoops in and says "ok, we'll delete now, STOP TALKING ABOUT IT", after (once again) telling all of us the OP looks legit.

No point in reporting anymore.

Throwingshade · 11/01/2016 20:00

Yep reported. The thing is the trolls do get a buzz out of it as those threads fill up quickly and run for pages either with people investing, being suckered in, calling troll or having a laugh etc. I'm not criticising the posters on there I'm just saying the troll gets a lot of attention so that in itself is reason to do it if you are an attention seeking saddo.

OP posts:
LilacSpunkMonkey · 11/01/2016 20:01

Well, exactly, goodnight.

Because God forbid we call them out on their lack of follow-up.

As I said on the other thread, poor show, HQ.

Ambroxide · 11/01/2016 20:22

I reported the hazz thread. Then I posted on the thread (politely) asking if it was a reverse. That comment was deleted. Then they deleted the thread. Why did they delete my perfectly polite comment? I was NOT troll-hunting publicly, though I did say I had already spoken to MNHQ. I just asked if it was a reverse. Are we not allowed to ask that kind of thing now?

AnyFucker · 11/01/2016 20:23

darth has the evil stepmother actually revealed she is the stepdaughter ?

handslikecowstits · 11/01/2016 20:39

Yes AF on a thread about a thread. Very odd. It has gone now.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2016 20:44

That's a bit disingenuous of MNHQ then.

In fact, it's downright weird.

The original thread went to 1000+ posts (when they usually stop at 1000) with no comment from HQ when it was chockfull of personal attacks and it was obvious it was getting the shit reported out of it

Then I saw the TAAT where you say turnintheroad admitted it was a reverse all along and HQ delete it for simply being a thread about a thread ?

Something bloody funny going on

handslikecowstits · 11/01/2016 20:49

I think they realised that the OP was a troll after they'd said it wasn't and didn't want to lose face.

Please correct me if I'm wrong MNHQ.

pocketsaviour · 11/01/2016 20:56

Moomin do you really have difficulty "hearing" whether a poster is male or female? I don't mean clues like talking about typical gender roles, but just the language and inflections used.

Have a look through your Facebook/Twitter/whatever feed and compare the male posts to the female.

Quick tips:
Women use more emoticons and "LOL" more often.
Women tend to phrase their opinions as questions, e.g. "Do you think you might sound a tiny bit racist when you say we should deport all Muslims?" or "Hey guys, maybe it's just me? and I'm being crazy or something LOL but I'm thinking maybe if we stopped putting cat turds in the photocopier, it might work better?"
Men tend to end their sentences with full stops (or without any punctuation) whereas women tend to end them with exclamation marks, question marks (or both!?) or a smiley.
Women add more disclaimers around their advice such as "If it were me", "I think I might", "what I would consider", "Have you thought about", etc. Men tend to just give directions, e.g. "You should paint it purple."

These are just a few. If you observe, you will find many more.

That said, many of the women on MN have worked hard on breaking societal gender norms, and their confidence shows in their posting style.

Nanny0gg · 11/01/2016 21:02

Anyone saying we have no trolls should be made to read that step-daughter thread.

How did that thread get to 11 pages? I thought they always stopped at 10.

I think cowstits is correct. I think that's why they finally agreed to delete the original thread.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 11/01/2016 21:09

Also pissed at the "That's enough now" post on the TAAT just before they deleted. Patronising when they were wrong and inactive.

I'm marking my card, here Grin

AnyFucker · 11/01/2016 21:11

I don't care how HQ run their site, tbh. It's up to them. It is free, after all. But they do usually do it in a fairly transparent manner. Oh well. Not my monkey (thank goodness)

boodlekazam · 11/01/2016 21:17

Are there also trolls that wait to post negative feedback/ advice on genuine posts also? I've read a lot of unhelpful, even nasty comments and advice on here lately where people are genuinely seeking help. Just wanted to raise this as obviously there are a lot of genuine people seeking help and leave feeling worse.
