How old were you you when you first moved in with a partner?

Hello all,

DD is 23 and is house hunting with her boyfriend, aged 24.

I hadn't thought twice about it, but a colleague has this morning expressed shock that they are doing it so young.

I don't even think they are young. They are financially independent 20-somthings with good jobs and career prospects.

So... is 23/24 unusual? What did you do?

  1. It lasted all of nine months because he was a control freak who started to constantly put me down. He also started staying out all weekend.

So, it was a big mistake and I had to buy him out. I then lived alone for the next ten years til DP and I moved in together :)

23/24 not too young. Quite normal I would say.

We moved in to our first mortgaged property at 18. Then married the following year.

tb · 27/02/2015 18:40

21 - married with mortgage costing £125 a month for £9500 over 25 years.

MsRinky · 27/02/2015 18:47

23, as soon as I graduated. Bought our house at 28 (after he'd gone back to college as a "mature" student and graduated) married at 29, still very happily together now, 20 years down the road...

PixieChops · 27/02/2015 19:03

I was 28 when I finally left home and moved in with OH (we'd only been together since for about 6 months and Id been pregnant for 4 of them!) I think if you're secure financially (which I wasn't which is why I left it so late) then go for it. I don't think any age is really too young to move out as long as your mature enough to pay your bills etc.

19, rented a flat with bf, he was 24, split up 7 years later.

Onecurrantbun · 27/02/2015 19:40

I married 6 years ago at just turned z21; we moved in together a few months before the wedding, so 20. It was young for our group of friends but now we are all between 25 & 30 there's not many of us left at home, and most are living with partners or married (a few are renting rooms or flats alone)

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 27/02/2015 23:07

Almost 30.

CointreauVersial · 27/02/2015 23:17
  1. It only lasted three years, though.
CalleighDoodle · 27/02/2015 23:36

3 weeks before turning 23.

We'd been together since I was 20 and I'd lived away from home since 18.

Milllli · 28/02/2015 00:28

Married and moved in together at 25.....now 59.

Milllli · 28/02/2015 00:29

no,no,no....I'm not 59 ( silly phone) I'm 50!!

Seekingtheanswers · 28/02/2015 07:52

I was 25 and had been with my boyfriend for 3 years. We got married a couple of years later, and then had a baby five years after that. :)

I wouldn't say that anyone is "too young" to move in with a boyfriend, as everyone is different. However, from a personal point of view, I'm very glad that I had a few years of living independently first, and I hope that my dd will do the same.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/02/2015 07:53

25, having known him for three months. married fifteen months after that. 29 years and 2 children later, still going strong!

tumbletumble · 28/02/2015 07:56

I was 28. We'd been together since I was 23, but he moved abroad after we'd been together a couple of years. We got engaged while he was abroad and bought a house together as soon as he came back.

bigbluestars · 28/02/2015 08:07

19- I also got my first mortgage at 19. Divorced at 26.

ScorpioMermaid · 28/02/2015 08:26

alphabook · 28/02/2015 08:33

I was 24, DH was 23. Got engaged the same year and got married the year after. We've now been married for 2 years.

MuttersDarkly · 28/02/2015 08:39

demonchilde · 28/02/2015 16:03

17, then DS was born 3 weeks later.

Not really my choice- parents chucked me out, but I was happy to be gone.

I'd say early 20's was probably average tbh.

KittiKat · 28/02/2015 16:11

I was 17.
