We have 1 car between 2 of us.
No matter how skint we have been we have always made sure dp has a car to get from A to B.
My mum is offering to buy me a runaround.
Dp is saying we dont need two cars and will sell his if i get one.
Is this unreasonable of me to want to have a car or him to say he will sell his if I do.
At the moment we have to do a relay to his work to pick up his work van and me follow him home if i need the car in the morning.

if you can afford the extra tax, mot and insurance then go for it.

he is being unreasonable. tell him if he sells his car he will not be allowed to use yours.

fattiemumma · 28/09/2006 17:56

i can see it from both sides. is there anything you need more than a car that your mum cold help with? if he sold his car what would you spend the money on?

charliecat · 28/09/2006 17:56

if he sold his car he would squander the money in a fortnight.
Nothing else needed.

The bit that stands out for me is the 'no matter how skint'.

If you have to make sure his car gets from A to B then there may be times when yours has to stand idle from lack of funds.

If you consider the tax, insurence, MOT, servicing and everything else that may just be wasted sitting at the side of the road if you are hard up for a few weeks maybe a month or 2 over the year, is it worth shelling out for another car when you have an arrangement that works to a degree?

Also any current car seats may not fit in the new car so money may have to be spent to make sure you have safe seats for your children.

You may also find you end up using it for little journeys that you don't really need to use it for adding more expense.
