Finances and relationship breakdown

I am just wondering if anyone knows about finances when a relationship breaks down? I a not married but recently split with my partner of 10yrs, we lived in my house and his name was not on the mortgage or any bills. He has his own house (rented) and he paid me nominal rent towards the household bills. I earn considerably more than him, although he is self employed so difficult to prove either way. Does anyone know if he has any financial rights on my income or property?

Neither - but then, you don't either. You aren't married. It's as if the relationship never existed. 'Common law' is a myth. It doesnt exist in English law.

Agree with the above (although do check with a solicitor if you're at all unsure). As you are not married your partner's status regarding your property or income is no higher than that of paying guest or lodger.

The status of common law wife/husband is fiction under English law so you should be fine. I think you can rest easy here. Is he making noises about wanting a settlement from you?

Hi thanks for this everyone, yes we have 2 children, he is not trying to get money yet!!! I have recently learnt how people are not what they seem in these situations. He pays me no money for the children either.
