Partner living in a caravan

Milly101 · 15/02/2014 22:26

My partner of 18 months lives in a touring caravan moving it from site to every 3/4 weeks, any time I've asked him why he lives this way al he ever does is shrugg his shoulders and say " cause I like it " I've seen his invoices/bank statements and he earns in excess of £1000 a week so it's not financial , I just find it very weird. For the record he is lovely in every other way considerate a good listener kind and generous. Would this bother you ?

On what? You've barely described your relationship, or how you feel about your partner's lifestyle. Or if you want to have kids with him, or how his caravan living affects you. Or anything really.

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 22:03

I'm not sure how I feel about it the truth be told

Perhaps he just loves the lifestyle and doesnt need anything else.

I get that, as I have a 9 metre motorhome parked up behind my house that I bought with the money left to me by my mum when she died.

We live in it about 6 weeks a year in the school holidays, the DC all sleep in tents pitched around it. When the DC have all left home DP and I will probably live in it and tour for most of the year. As long as we have an internet connection we can both work from it.

We have met quite a few people on our travels who live permananetly on the move. They are all sorts of people, often with good jobs. They just love that life.

Okay. It sounds like you are asking for opinions to help you understand your own mind. I am going to ask you some questions in a hopefully useful attempt to help you clarify your thoughts.

Are you imagining living with him some day?
Do you have opinions on the social status of caravans?
Are you a bit embarrassed about his choices?
Did you always picture youself with someone different?
Is the caravan uncomfortable in some way?

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 22:21

Yes yes yes no and no

Where's my nearest joinery course? £1000 a week?

I don't think there is anything wrong with him living like this in a caravan, good on him. Why not.

My only question is where the money's going.

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 22:25

He does some specialist thing that I don't quite understand , from wot I gather the majority of the money is saved

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 16/02/2014 22:26

there are no self employed joiners earning a grand a week in 2014

somebody's nose is growing

is this for an article you are writing, OP ?

MorrisZapp · 16/02/2014 22:28

Yes yes yes no and no?

Blimey. The nights must fly by round at yours.

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 22:29

Well I know of 1 anyfucker I have seen his invoices

JeanSeberg · 16/02/2014 22:31

Income has nothing to do with profit.

VoyageDeVerity · 16/02/2014 22:38

I think him and his set-up sounds very suspect personally. No way would I have a future with a man like this.
You will be stuck with screaming babies and a man puffing weed in the sky with the fairies

horsetowater · 16/02/2014 22:40

He might be charging clients the equivalent of 1K a week but if he's spending 50% of that on materials it paints a different picture.

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 23:01

He is labour only and supplies no materials I have seen the hourly rate he charges and the hours he works he is making around £1000 a week sometimes a bit more sometimes a bit less

OP posts:
JeanSeberg · 16/02/2014 23:07

What's his hourly rate then and who supplies the materials he uses?

Milly101 · 16/02/2014 23:10

For gods sake why is this become so much of a issue it's just over 20 per hour and the main contractor supplies the materials

OP posts:
GarlicReverses · 16/02/2014 23:11

Of course a really great joiner can command £1k+ a week. They're hard to find.

Milly, were you wondering whether you're being snobbish about the caravan? You are allowed to have your own feelings, you know Grin

LillyAlien · 16/02/2014 23:15

£200 a day is not particularly high for a skilled construction worker (and joiners are skilled). £250-300 would be more like it, meaning that even factoring in periods between jobs £1000 pw is reasonable.

OP, I think one reason people like living on caravan sites is because they don't bump into too many of the blinkered and judgey people on this thread who assume that people who live in caravans and smoke weed are all drug dealers. Hmm

horsetowater · 16/02/2014 23:16

So he does a 50 hour week at £20 - that makes sense.

He's fine. Good on him for living in a caravan, maybe get him to build you a house. :)

JeanSeberg · 16/02/2014 23:18

Probably because people are wondering what the point of this thread is, what with it being your first and your reluctance to give any info combined with the one word answers.

Horsemad · 16/02/2014 23:59

My comment wasn't particularly aimed at you It'sok. I was commenting on the fact that several posters thought the OP's partner was living in a caravan to avoid paying CT.

Surely nobody lives in a caravan just for that reason? There must be other reasons too, I'd imagine.

horsetowater · 17/02/2014 00:22

I know someone who lives in a caravan. She lets out her house and lives on someone's farm. She is very happy and content. I say good on her. She will have an even better retirement.

differentnameforthis · 17/02/2014 03:41

OMG people!!

he has a job & earns a good wage
he lives in a caravan

so

he is lying about what he earns
he is dodging tax
he is dodging council tax
he is a drug dealer
he is chilish
he depends on his parents

Bloody hell. For some of you on here ripping a man apart really is entertainment, isn't it!
