step-families once parents have died

Just wondering how many step-siblings stay in touch , or stay as a family, once both parents have died?

Since my step-mother died, some years after my father, the two different branches of the family have pretty much drifted apart from each other, and we were steps for over thirty years.

Some of us schooled together, others lived together for long periods, weathered family upheavals, births deaths and marriages as a family unit, but maybe we were just always two different families held together by our parents' marriage, and once they were gone the 'family' ties were not that strong.
