I met my wonderful DH on a dating site so it can definitely work out.

Maybe jumping ahead here but if you are meeting anyone on a date my top tip is to make it lunch or drinks or something short. That way if it doesn't work out you haven't got too many embarassing silences. Oh and don't waste time on blokes who are really keen to email, text and phone but reluctant to meet up in real life.
