Sheffield modern day slavery case. How different is this to DV?

Just wondered if anyone sees parallels with the notion of "modern day slavery" and common or garden DV/EA?

Is it similar? If so - why is the media coverage, public out cry and sentencing not similar?

There are crossovers, certainly. Often the slaves in question - like EA victims - are not physically imprisoned but stay put through fear. Sentencing will depend on the severity and violence involved so I disagree that there are double standards. Media coverage always chases the most interesting story and, unlike the more common cases, a homeless man kept like a dog in a shed is an interesting story ... that's just life

There are some parallels yes. I think the differences are significant though - generally victims of dv are not vulnerable adults (in the sense of having considerablt learning difficulties) and also that they are not physically constrained from leaving (although they are often constrained in other ways).

The advice that is often given to victims of dv here on Mumsnet - gather your important papers, hide money, ring Women's Aid, call the police, tell him to leave, make a plan - this guy could do none of those things. Sad He had no way to help himself so I'd say his position was more similar to an abused child than a victim of 'common or garden' dv.

Those are my feelings, anyway.
