I'm useless...how do you tell whether a guy is just friendly or interested?

Very non specifically - if he calls you when he says he will and is asking you out then he is interested . If he's not calling you and not asking you out - , despite you making it clear you'd be happy with this he's not interested

Go to snog him? Interested if he snogs you back, not so interested if he recoils in fear.

Decide you ARE interested and treat him with that in mind. He will either respond or back off.

I am crap at spotting when people fancy me, and so I usually go and get drunk with them, and see if we end up snogging . Not a wise life-plan overall, but you know what they say about in vino veritas ...
