Looking for motivational songs to help with overcoming H affair and deceit

Whatnext074 · 01/10/2013 19:36

Some of you may have read my post on my H leaving me for a co-worker and know that I am really struggling to cope.

Music is very important to me but I can't bear to have radio on or use my I-pod as there are so many songs that bring back memories.

My H has an I-tunes account which I don't think he's deactivated yet so I'm looking to fill my I-pod with songs that will help me during the bad times to get my strength back and I would like some suggestions.

I have thought of Alanis Morrisette - You Oughta Know and Kelis, Caught Out There (I hate you so much right now).

Are there any other suggestions?

The song that got me through

I am the resuration ( sp) by the stone roses

MrsReacher85 · 02/10/2013 15:12

I would recommend Kellie pickler, best days of your life just for the line-''they say once a cheater, always a cheater, so I've got my pride and she's got you."

And also Kelly clarkson Never Again.

TheHammaconda · 02/10/2013 16:14

Family reunion by Blink 182 is awesome for situations like this.

Fozziebearmum2be · 02/10/2013 16:32

Lots by Kelly Clarkson, Pink etc which have been mentioned. Including 'who knew' by Pink.

Best thing I never had by Beyoncé is a cracker too Smile

pipsqueakz · 02/10/2013 16:37

Tom petty also has a song called You Got Lucky which goes:

If you think you can do better than me then go, just go!
But remember! good love is hard to find, good love is hard to find
and you got lucky babe, when I found you.

mammadiggingdeep · 02/10/2013 19:12

When I was totally broken, 'wonder' by Emile SaNde got me through. Used to sing it at the top of my voice, sometimes sang it through gritted teeth, and sometimes with tears running down my face.
"If your heart turns blue/I want you to remember/this song is for you/and you are full of wonder". Also there's a line in it which says "....I ain't going under" in it. That was my catch phrase. My friends would comment how together I seemed and I'd reply "what choice do I have?! I've got 2 dd under 3....I ain't going under".
Life is too short to "go under" because of somebody else's treatment of you. The song helped me remind myself every day.
One day I was having a down moment...was walking along the road. Suddenly the sun came out from behind a cloud just at the moment 'wonder' came blaring from a car in the traffic. I strutted along that road, head up, shoulders back, as if I owned the place!!!! Music is so powerful!!!!!!
Good luck on your journey xxx

Jenny Talia!

Ultimate break up song. Who doesn't love a song that ends with:

Darling, so thank you

For the brand-new super-duper dildo

As I dunk it in

The jar beside the bed

Was that KY gel

Or chilli sauce?

I could not give a damn

Just bend over

And take it like a man

meditrina · 02/10/2013 19:16

Chumbawumba 'I get knocked down I get up again '
Whitesnake 'Here I go again on my own'

And most of "Back in Black" by AC/DC

mammadiggingdeep · 02/10/2013 19:16

Oh and defo Macalmont and butler....yes.
"You can't help someone recover after what you did.... so tell me, an I looking better? Have you forgot, whatever it was that you could t stand, about me, about me, about me...."
Turn that bad boy up and SING!!!!!! :)

meditrina · 02/10/2013 19:17

Oh and XRay Specs "Some people say little girls should be seen and not heard. but I say oh bondage, up yours! "

meditrina · 02/10/2013 19:18

And Transvision Vamp "Baby I don't Care"

And the soundtrack of Cabaret - in particular "Farewell Mein Liebe Herr"

frogslegs35 · 02/10/2013 20:12

Apologies if any of these have been suggested before.

Cher - strong enough. Also Save up all your tears - a few lines from the song :
*I can't figure you out
But a heart must be the one thing
You were born without
I've been wastin' my time
I don't know where I'll sleep tonight

You say that you can do without me
Go ahead now try and live without me*

You don't know it now, you don't know it now
You don't know it now, you don't know it now
You don't know it now
But some wounds get deeper with time
You don't feel it now
Till the need burns, a knife turns
Your heart bleeds like mine

Pink -
So what

Try

Blow me one last kiss is a good FU song, especially the lines :
I will do what I please, anything that I want
I will breathe, I will breathe, I won't worry at all
You will pay for your sins, you'll be sorry my dear
All the lies, all the why's, will all be crystal clear

Perfect

Kelly clarkson - stronger.

Not my usual tune but my friend liked it Keith Urban - you'll think of me.

Gaybaron · 03/10/2013 01:03

Rammstein's Amour and Du Hast.

PainInTheBum · 04/10/2013 01:09

Apologies as I have made the fatal mistake of not reading the whole thread and hope I don't make a total cock up having missed something vital.

I'm really sorry about what you've been going through, music is a great way to get through. But personally I'd ditch the maudlin songs and the 'I will survive' type songs, because you will survive and come out of this so much bloody stronger. You don't need reminding of the shit times so get focused on the good. Get a playlist of songs that just make you feel cheery and good and positive regardless of the message, if it makes you want to get up and dance and thinking of lovely things then that is a song to be playing regardless of the message and intent to the lyrics. That in itself can be hugely personal, for example people seem to find REMs night swimming positive and depressing in a roughly equal split.

I have an eclectic happy mix with my favourite go to songs being The Imperial March from Star Wars and Prince: Raspberry Beret. The rest includes McFly, James Taylor, The Beach Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Prodigy, Bananarama, Belinda Carlisle, Energy 52, Rolling Stones, Karmin and A Ha to name just a tiny number. These songs come from so many places and make me feel good and that can be very personal.

Just create a list that makes you happy, songs you can't feel really shit when listening to, the songs that no matter how shit your life is going represent a chink of light. th

PainInTheBum · 04/10/2013 01:11

Bugger, hate my iPad not really

To finish get songs that have you looking to the future positively not trying to exorcise demons from your past.

I'm rooting for you OP. X

twoshootingstars · 04/10/2013 06:13

Ha! I delurked to join in.. Songs got me thru, sing it loud and sing it proud sister! Grin
I recommend starting a spotify account if you want to have your own access to music. I listened to music constantly.
In the beginning, I was in such shock tho, all I could bear was this digital radio station called Chill, it was great actually. All the songs were beautiful mellow, acousticie numbers that seemed to have really positive messages!
Nina Simone- here comes the sun, John Martyn sun shines better on a brighter day etc it was really helped me.

After that when I started listening to my own stuff again- My songs were more about rebuilding strength and empowering, rather than getting angry..

But with the exception of Whitney Houston 'It's not right but it's ok' which is a frikken awesome pissed off song.
I then cancelled out the rage with her song- 'My love is your love' gorgeous happy song restored my faith in the love I want to have in future etc..

Defying Gravity from Wicked..( 'and you can't pull me down.. and if I'm flying solo at least I'm flying free, to those who ground me take a message back from me!!' )
YES!! Such a great anthem! Seriously- if you jump around to this singing along in an overly dramatic musical theatre way- you burn calories and feel amazing. Win.

Another one Us Amazonians by Kirsty Maccoll ( of blessed memory) I would literally sing this all day, thinking of amazonian strength to get through it.. plus another good one for dancing around to!
ROAR powerful amazonians!
I just adore Kirsty, and recommend the whole of that Tropical Brainstorm album and also the Kite album, she was strong inspirational, funny songwriter.

Kate Bush- Big Sky
'i'm looking at the big sky.. you never understood me, never really tried' Love it! (blimey tho, how bonkers is that vid? Love our kate )
and Running up that Hill .. beautiful.

These were /are my constants.. plus lots of Foo Fighters.
Oh my goodness totally just remembered a bloody brillo song is by Ani De Franco- which basically goes 'Fuck you and your untouchable face' it's kinda like a mellower version of 'you oughta know'
Also Indigo Girls - Closer to Fine, is a great singing it out song.. not really about anything to do with anything but is very empowering.

Oh and one I heard recently which made me whoop was this, further down the road song, maybe..
Destiny's Child - Independent woman
and of course SURVIVOR!!!
Yeeahh..

Will be back with some more..!! I really feel dancing and singing loudly and badly really helped me as much as anything.. Good luck OP.

(sorry about the ugly links, couldn't work out how to do clever linking)

twoshootingstars · 04/10/2013 06:56

Just realised- I am all about the powerful female singer songwriter! Haha!
More anthems coming at you..

Wilson Pickett- Hold On

Recent stuff -
Haim- Falling ( don't stop never look back )
Ben Howard- Keep your Head Up
Laura Mvula - That's Alright ( who made you the centre of the universe line)
Alabama Shakes- Hold on (another on!!)
Lianne La Havas- Forget

Get some of that rage out and rock out to:
Pj Harvey- 50ft Queenie..
Hole- Violet or Malibu..

But I totally agree with Pain in the Bum, find the songs that are your anthems, that make you think of good times, being happy and being YOU!
Music really reminded me of who I was, when I thought I lost that and of all the many good times I'd had in my life before I met the ex and kept me focused that everything was going to be just fine.

jenny99 · 04/10/2013 06:57

Not necessarily completely apt lyrics, but Lily Allen has got great attitude....especially 'f**k you'. Great to listen to when you want to feel a boost and feel in control.

twoshootingstars · 04/10/2013 07:03

HAHAHA!! Deliberate mistake= Wilson Phillips not Pickett!!
Oopss

Whatnext074 · 04/10/2013 14:39

PainInTheBum - there's a lot of truth in what you say and I think 'I will Survive' for example won't work for me. I need some happy songs mixed in with some angst - I have only recently stopped playing on repeat, Chase & Status 'Let you Go', which is a scarily stalkerish song.

twoshootingstars - I agree and also that Whitney Houston and Destiny's Child songs are very empowering. I love Kate Bush as well. Strangely enough (maybe because I'm more sensitive to it now), 'Hold On' has been on the radio a lot recently, strange because it's such an old song.

Thank you all for your kind words.
