So desperately sad for my dd

She has been living with her lovely boyfriend for a few years, they are buying a house, planning the future, she has never been happier..suddenly he just announced he wanted them to break up - he doesn't love her anymore and he can't try any longer. She had no idea, no inkling whatsoever, and is devastated. In some ways I admire him for having the courage rather than just letting it drag on, but I am heartbroken for her. It's so so sad. All the practical things are being organised but I just want her to shrink and be my little girl again :( I never thought her pain would hit me like this. She has had other relationships of course( she's in her 20's) but this was 'it'. Lovely bloke, good jobs, nice house, children planned. I am in shock too :(

Poor girl. All you can do is be there for her as best you can.

Poor her. This happened to me last year and I know my parents found it very difficult to deal with.

All you can do is offer support - emotional and practical. Reassure her she can sob and sob at you if she needs to talk it all through. With time she will realise this is for the best and is very common. When appropriate you can help her get this perspective, and for god sake don't feed any negative thoughts and rule out any "on the shelf" style thinking.

It's awful isn't it? I just want to take her away and wrap her up. I have done the 'in a while, you will realise that it's all ok again' but that is such a rubbish thing to say :( . I never realised how painful it would be. I have two more small ones to go through this with as well!
