DP bumming cigarettes... AIBU?

I don't mind my DP smoking - both my parents smoke - but tonight embarrassed me. On our way home he tried very politely to bum cigarettes off two people. The first person declined but was nice about it; the second just said 'no' very rudely and glared at DP (which in my opinion is understandable, as cigarettes are VERY expensive). It was clear to me from the second person's body language that he was never going to give DP a cigarette; DP says that he noticed this but ignored it.

I pointed out that I felt very embarrassed in this situation as I was with my DP. To me, this is out and out begging. DP said it is like getting a cigarette off a friend - but to me it's really not! Approaching a stranger in the street is different, especially when that stranger clearly doesn't want to be disturbed.

I said to my DP that he should either buy more cigarettes, or leave people alone in the street. He has now gone off in a huff. AIBU?! I'm embarrassed!

I don't smoke any more but this used to boil my piss. I had 4 people try to bum off me in one beer garden afternoon. I just politely pointed out that there was a cigarette machine and I struggled to support my own habit, let alone anyone else's. There are a lot of all night garages and shops now. No need.

I had a huge falling out with a friend who used to nick all mine and inform me 'we' needed more. I spent 12 quid one night on fags that she smoked half of. I informed her before nights out to buy some after that. She was fuming. You don't smoke OP's, end of.

Yanbu.

DHs friend does this but with us, but he does it ALL the time!

He can afford fags but just doesn't but any. I've now banned him from coming without any.

saulaboutme · 01/09/2013 15:14

Fackinell, I can believe that. Me and DH in a position about this friend right now.

He's to tell him before he visits to bring his own, and any booze cos he'll go through ours no bother.

A lady asked me for one when we were in Disneyland this summer..she had left hers in the car and would have been stuck for the day. She was lovely, explained her situation and offered to pay. We had a lot as we both smoke and bought duty free. We cobbled together enough to see her through the day and didnt mind doing so as could feel her pain!! If it is not scrounging and the person explains that have run out and shop is shut etc I wouldnt hesitate

SusuwatariToes · 01/09/2013 15:52

Can you really not buy cigarettes in Disneyland?

fifi669 · 01/09/2013 16:19

Personally I've always given a cig when asked. I'm not remotely bothered by it though I don't know if I'd do it myself.

Lweji · 01/09/2013 16:41

The problem is that some people end up giving loads of cigarettes and, conversely, others end up asking for loads.

If I was being constantly asked for cigarettes, I'd stop giving them away.

Mind you, I have a similar thing with painkillers. I often have ibuprofen or paracetamol in my purse because of period pains and I end up always giving them away.
Ok, they are not that expensive, but it's also the trouble of having to go to the pharmacy/shop to get some, and remembering to buy them.

TheFallenNinja · 01/09/2013 16:45

Did he also ask for the price of a cup of tea?

Bant · 01/09/2013 16:51

So tell your dh that acceptable etiquette is to offer to pay 50p when asking for a cig. If he doesn't and you're with him, you'll offer the money instead and apologise loudly for your tight arsed husband.

Most times they wouldn't accept the money.

Saulaboutme, I quit and she was really pissed off and said I was boring these days. She is no longer a friend. It's infuriating!!

Another friend used to buy silk cut and then casually at some point switch my malboro lights with hers. She did it with my last four the night I was quitting and went home before I realised. I made up new swear words that night I can tell you. Angry

saulaboutme · 01/09/2013 21:30

Omg fackinell. No way! Fags are expensive, rolling tobacco is not cheap either.

DHs friend isn't strapped. He's a sponger.

LEMisdisappointed · 01/09/2013 21:35

blimey

fackinell · 02/09/2013 01:13

Best thing I ever did was getting an ecig. Stops the bummers, although an occasional random smoker will ask to try but I don't mind that if it helps them quit. Smile

LJL69 · 02/09/2013 15:31

no fags for sale at Disney..but i was quite shocked to find a smoking zone right under cinderellas castle. Must be for the ugly sisters.
