I changed my name by deep poll before my divorce. It cost about 40 quid.

Divorce costs vary depending on whether you do it yourself or need legal advice. I used a sol and it cost a lot tbh but we had property etc.

akaWisey · 03/08/2013 18:52

deed poll not deep poll!!!!!

littleballerina · 03/08/2013 19:04

how can you do it yourself?

thankyou.

I have no idea how much divorce costs because I did it when there was legal aid available... however to changemy name back I took my birth certificate and my divorce document from the court with me to the bank and they did it for me. Same with everything else (or I had to send certified copies).

littleballerina · 03/08/2013 19:10

thankyou Smile

Divorce costs around £400 to file, no idea how much a lawyer costs
If you want to change your name by deed poll you can do it online for £30
You don't need to for everyday use, just start using your name again. For bank and passport changes you might need a deed poll certificate though.
Next time you get married keep your name Wink

SheerWill · 03/08/2013 20:03

I changed mine back by deed poll as cant afford a divorce yet. Feels so wonderful to be myself again -with my own name. Always regretted changing it to be honest and I now have the certificate on the wall :-)

Visit wikivorce and there will be information about it there.
If you diy you need both parties to agree. I think it's about £125.

Divorce costs depend on whether he contests the petition (rare) and how much assets there are eg house, pension, investments.

You need grounds for a divorce and assets are generally split 50:50. If there are DC it might be slightly different in that you can stay in a marital home until the youngest DC is 18 (own home obv).

You can get a free half hour consultation with moist solicitors.

I changed my name back passport and drivers license without a deed poll or divorce decree. Then changed banks and everything else by showing marriage certificate, birth certificate and new passport etc. Deed poll is completely unnecessary to use a name that is already yours.

littleballerina · 05/08/2013 13:41

thanks all.

Doubt ex will contest it but can i simply state- fell out of love or unhappily married as grounds for divorce?!

No assets.

Zepro- how did you change without deed poll?

I also reverted my maiden name without deed poll, long before I was actually divorced. It was simply a case of showing birth certificate to places like the bank/work and sending it if to passport office/Dvla to change documents...it was fantastically liberating (especially as I'd always despised my married name!)

littleballerina · 05/08/2013 14:12

I don't despise my married name but definately prefer my maiden name. I sort of want to keep sharing the children's name but I feel that it would be liberating!

Oh and DIY divorce was simple an easy (separated 2 years, not contested, I didn't want any of his money and we agreed access/maintenance beforehand). Simply downloaded the documents from direct.gov and followed the instructions...think it cost about £350...

littleballerina · 05/08/2013 15:05

thankyou ilovechips.

Like ilovechips I had a DIY divorce that cost no more than about £400 and that was for clean break.

I was going to keep my married name and then when I got with OH and we started seriously discussing having DC I decided to revert to maiden name. I really didn't want DCs asking why mummy had a different name to them and to nanny and grandad. A bit futile in the end though as I'm getting married to OH in a few weeks and the DC are too little to even realise. DD is beginning to understand surnames now so we've just told her I have the same one as them!
