DH advice

My Dh means well but never seems to be able to look after the children with out upset. He is very set in his ways and finds it difficult to be flexible. It causes a two fold problem, one: I am expected to stay by/stay out of it to let him look after the children even when they are clearly upset. Two: I cannot have a break form child care sickness or any other reason. Any suggestions to help my DH or how I can intervene without it looking like I am stepping in???????

How exactly does he act?
How does he upset the children?
