Mirena strings??

Dear All, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but I couldn't find one for Contraception....

Anyway, I had the Mirena coil fitted a week ago, (I'm 41, two boys 8 & 4) it's been fine, so far. The only problem I'm having is that my partner can feel the strings (I think that's what it is) he said it feels like, 'being poked by needles', was the first time time, second time was like, 'being hit by a small stick', third time was, 'it feels like those plastic things that attach price tags to clothes'. Not that he's got a vivid imagination or anything....

Has anyone else had this problem and does it resolve itself?

Many thanks

Did your GP/family planning nurse trim the strings? I have a Mirena and I have had no comments at all from OH, I think my strings are quite short.

NotYouNaanBread · 24/06/2013 19:04

My DH complained about this too at first, but it seems that they soften after a little while (strings, not husbands...), so it stops being an issue.

Ask to have them trimmed.

gintastic · 24/06/2013 19:05

Go back and ask for them to be trimmed. Mine were a bit long and my OH was slightly more graphic about the whole thing!

hurricanewyn · 24/06/2013 19:06

They will soften after a while, but if it's sore before then you can go back to where it was fitted you can ask for them to be trimmed.

Thanks for all your responses, I will go back and ask about trimming them. Could you tell me how long it took for the strings to soften?

I had mine trimmed but they'd softened by about 2 weeks in.

Those plastic tag attachment things btw? They're called kimbles

DLCC · 24/06/2013 20:16

Oh really SoHs? that's great, I was thinking weeks and weeks....
Kimbles? thanks for that, OH thought they were called dennytags?!

You learn something new every day! :)
