Harriet, it is hard, he is old and frail and I guess will not be mobile after the op. he hates being physically unable.

Oh yeah Kitty - contractions master class! Uterine contractions are muscular contractions which pull up (shorten & dilate) the cervix at the same time as pushing the baby downwards from the top. It hurts because the blood supply to the uterus is temporarily cut off during the contraction causing ischaemia which is painful in the same way it would be if the blood supply to your arm was completely cut off. The pushing bit hurts less because you don't have the pain of the baby's head being rammed against your poor cervix during contractions & it being pulled open anymore - it's just pressure from the top pushing the baby down the birth canal. I quite enjoyed pushing too! Such a powerful feeling!! Grin

Ah sorry Harriet - relationships are hard aren't they? Sad

Hmmmm - hard to recall as they all merge into each other after 18 years! To be honest the last one I did (waterbirth at home) a couple of weeks ago was pretty much as good as it gets. It was wonderful. Smile

Hi, guys! Should be ecstatic about my DD1's return to the UK with my GD2 (whom I will meet for the first time) but am suffering overwhelming sadness at the knowledge that my little bro will not be here to join in the celebrations! Sorry, everyone, to be so morbid; know that you all have your own crosses to bear.

cafecito · 15/05/2013 01:39

I am laughing so hard at 'you'll have to drop out of medicine' Grin
I honestly would feel so incompetent as a midwife, I really would, but what a brilliant career to have - what better to focus your work on, really? (mutters to self) am procrastinating dreadfully, so much so I did no work, went to bed and then couldn't sleep.. and now up again.. and can neither work nor sleep [arrrrgh] also have an early morning pbl sesh. joy.

consider self educated re ischaemic pain in labour, I didn't realise Blush

Re relationship gloom, mm. ex P driving me up the wall of late, it's sad how things can be so sour, why won't people learn how short life is and make the most of being nice and surrounding self with love and positivity, especially if there are children Confused

starsandunicorns · 15/05/2013 07:32

Wishes she had midwife when i was in labour first time i had one a grumpy one wasnt allowed to move off bed second time midwife went off duty and took the drug cabinet key so couldnt have my peathdine. Oh and i had my mother at the 2nd one who nearly tripped up the midwife when dd2 head popped out as she scared the crap out of mother as her eyes were open !!!

starsandunicorns · 15/05/2013 07:33

So dd2 was born with just gas and air

starsandunicorns · 15/05/2013 07:40
