Really trivial dinner party etiquette question

Hi,
Completely trivial question but...
Say a couple ask you over for dinner, and while they're nice people and have made an effort, you just don't 'click' with them. You have plenty of other friends whose company you really enjoy, but you don't have time to see them as regularly as you'd like.

Do you:
a) Ask them back and get embroiled in an endless loop of reciprocal dinner parties til you drop dead. Who knows, you might eventually enjoy their company!
b) Ask them back but take increasingly long periods to reciprocate until they get the message. (This too might take a while.)
c) Don't ask them back and accept that they'll be pished off. Hey - you're a busy gal - things to do, people to see!

Option C - life is too short to be bothered about such trivia!!! Wink

tracyk · 19/05/2006 14:29

B - keep your options open.

Bozza · 19/05/2006 14:41

If I did dinner parties I would go for option b.

Kathy1972 · 19/05/2006 14:42

B. You've repaid the debt, but you don't ever have to go round to theirs again.

crunchie · 19/05/2006 14:46

invite them at some point to return the favour, but turn them down next time they ask - explain you are busy.

Auntymandy · 19/05/2006 14:47

c) or invite them when you have other guests too

charmkin · 19/05/2006 14:48

Ask them with some other people. Then you've paid the debt and had a nice night with people you do like...

Auntymandy · 19/05/2006 14:49

snap

Enid · 19/05/2006 14:57

A - but with other people

then unless they ask you the debt is repaid

suzywong · 19/05/2006 15:03

Agree with AUntyMandy, then other people can take up the slack, so to speak

LeahE · 19/05/2006 15:53

A/B (to begin with these will be much the same), with other people as well.
