Seem to have FB messages blocked?

A ex on FB, lets call him John , lives in New Zealand. Realistically I will never see him again. That's fine, no desire to meet, relationship was not a big deal. Nice, however to reconnect , share job and family news and stuff.
This is really a techie question. If he sends me a message on FB I get no notification. If I think he maybe has sent a message I have to click on his name, then on message, then on show message history to see any messages from him. It's as if someone has blocked either :

A) my Ability to receive his message (without hunting for it) , or,
B) his ability to send me a message that gets notified. Ie maybe at his end someone has configured it so that I don't get notified of his messages.

I think his wife, whom I don't know may have put some kind of blocks on.

Is this possible? Thanks all

mirai, thanks - why would messages go straight into an archive folder?
I will do a test and try to delete one...

mirai, I just successfully deleted messages

I can never find my archive folder when I'm on my iPhone, I have to go onto my laptop to retrieve it. Actually thinking about it, it's probably because I use the fb App d'oh! I'd get into the folder by going through Safari and using fb that way.

Just found it. It has three old messages ( not from this friend ) which I was able to delete

I've solved the mystery, thanks partly to Mirai!
Next to archive as an option there was spam as an option. All conversations with him were in spam ! Don't know how it got there - possibly one of my kids messing around
I have unspammed it.

I wonder if he deletes them soon after sending them but before you read them, so that his wife doesn't see them in his history

MM sounds odd I have a male friend who lives and works in Dakha we send each other emails through FB and there is no problem either way recieving them , think maybe someone is looking at them before you get them and trying to block them going to you?, hope you find out what the problem is .

Sorry just read your thing about SPAM phew glad you got that cleared up you got me wondering what the heck was going on!!!
