Engagement parties

What is the etiquette for giving gifts to these occasions? Surely you save the gift for the wedding? We received an invitation to a rather formal sounding engagement bash with hired venue etc. Will a card and a smile suffice?

Not sure what official etiquette is but no way would I take a present [tightwad emoticon]. Do you think you'll be invited to the wedding?

OhEmGee24 · 15/08/2012 19:32

My thoughts too. Groom is one of dp's best friends from school so yeah. It's a short engagement, wedding is in feb so two presents seems a bit extravagant Hmm

I think a card is enough

chirpchirp · 15/08/2012 20:02

I think it depends, when my best friend got engaged I got them this - www.etsy.com/listing/101955129/weird-love-dr-seuss-quote-poster? in a frame but like I say that was for my best friend. Under any other circumstances a card for the engagement, present for the wedding is fine.

I would take a gift, not necessarily an expensive one, perhaps a nice bottle of fizz or something, because I think it's polite if you've been invited to a party. I wouldn't dream of turning up empty-handed.

MadameCupcake · 15/08/2012 21:52

I would usually take a gift but no more than a tenner really, voucher usually.

MadameCupcake · 15/08/2012 21:54

or bubbly. I agree with Lady you wouldn't turn up empty handed to someones house for dinner so I think the same applies for a party where people have put on venue/food etc for guests.

I wouldn't expect it if I was hosting a party but would always take a present myself!

OhEmGee24 · 15/08/2012 21:56

Well my oh as ordered a personalised bottle of champs with "Congratulations on your engagement A & B, with love from X and Y". Am impressed!

So am I, that sounds perfect.

Lovely gift! I am sure they will love it.
