A friend invited me to go to an event with him this Thursday

today he sent me a text message saying the following:

"I'm really sorry to do this and hope you don't mind, but I'd really like to go to the poetry event with an old friend who's recently got back from several months abroad instead of with you. I spoke to him yesterday evening and he hasn't been able to get a ticket. Is that OK? Hopefully we can arrange something else soon."

Do you consider this reasonable?

If a friend texted me that, I would text back "Don't bother. I'm not interested in being your stopgap thanks."

KarmaK · 03/07/2012 16:00

It's definitely not the way to treat someone!

Shock

What Cailin said.

BalloonSlayer · 03/07/2012 16:01

It's one of those things that if you look at it REASONABLY and LOGICALLY and RATIONALLY is a perfectly OK thing to do.

However, it is abominably rude and he can get to Fuck.

HTH.

CheeseandPickledOnion · 03/07/2012 16:01

How fucking rude. Shock

chipsandmushypeas · 03/07/2012 16:01

"...instead of with you..."

No it is not reasonable and yes it is damn rude! It's like a joke text.

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2012 16:05

he certainly lacks tact!

i don't think i would lose a good friend over it, although i would be upset.

i guess if this is an incredibly good friend of his, who is heavily into poetry and would be sad to miss it, and if you yourself are not really that into it and wouldn't be bothered to not go, then i'd prob let it go

i think it's one of those things that are better done in person though instead of by text!

flowerflo · 03/07/2012 16:07

Extremely rude..........may have been slightly better if he'd called and explained instead of sending a text, but even so I'd still be really annoyed.

KarmaK · 03/07/2012 16:08

I'm considering completely ignoring his text, and him

OP posts:
CailinDana · 03/07/2012 16:08

Does he have form for this sort of thing?

KatieScarlett2833 · 03/07/2012 16:09

Reply "Not in this lifetime"

this actually ties in with the actions of another friend a few weeks back. We had longstanding plans to attend an event together. About four days before this friend contacted me to tell me that actually she'd been trying to get a ticket (for herself, not for me as well) to a far more prestigious event all along and her ticket had now been confirmed, therefore she'd be cancelling our plans.

More and more I'm thinking that both these friends are not particularly pleasant people.

The rest of my friends don't treat people in such a random way

CailinDana · 03/07/2012 16:11

I am constantly amazed at the brass neck of some people.

KarmaK · 03/07/2012 16:11

Caillin, no this guy doesn't particularly have form for this kind of thing. He is exceedingly negative in general but he hasn't shown any particular habit of this particular cancelling thing

OP posts:
HairyGrotter · 03/07/2012 16:11

I'd be grateful to get out of it, I fucking hate poetry evenings. BUT if it was something I'd have enjoyed, I'd be pissed and would certainly let it be known!

ChitChatFlyingby · 03/07/2012 16:12

It's very rude, but if you're a good friend maybe he thought you'd be ok with it as a once off? I could see some circumstances where it wouldn't be completely off, if you weren't really into poetry and going more as a favour to him to keep him company, you do loads of things together anyway and this is a once off, etc.

thisisyesterday · 03/07/2012 16:13

why don't you text back and say "actually it's not OK, and I mind greatly"

CurrySpice · 03/07/2012 16:16

Whatever you reply, make it a poem

Very rude

ShatnersBassoon · 03/07/2012 16:16

Rude, rude, rude. Was it an event you were keen to go to, or did he invite you as a bit of company?

SauvignonBlanche · 03/07/2012 16:18

Very rude!

KarmaK · 03/07/2012 16:18

It's an event I was keen to go to. We arranged it about 2 months ago

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 03/07/2012 16:19

I agree with you OP, completely ignore the text and him.

Do you already have the ticket or will he text you again snivelling for that?

You deserve better people than this in your life, cheeky sod.

AuntLucyInPeru · 03/07/2012 16:19

I'd text back, "I'm assuming this person is the love of your life and you plan to surprise them with a marriage proposal at the poetry event. I look forward to a wedding invite in due course. If they're someone you're just hoping for a shag with, consider me mortally offended Grin"
