If it's that painful, see a doctor. Twinge stage you can treat with OTC meds and cranberry juice etc. but, if it's 'bloody painful' or there is any blood in your urine, don't muck around or you can end up with kidney problems.

Get theeself to the pharmacy and get those dis-solvable powders and drink them.
Along with cranberry juice and buckets of water!

Have you tried drinking baking soda mixed into water? It's meant to help the ph of your urine.

BelieveInPink · 09/06/2012 23:03

It is yes. You know it's bad when you'd just prefer to sit on the toilet permanently.

Get thee to a doctor though, when it's beyond that tell tale twinge, you need more than water.

Pochemuchka · 09/06/2012 23:14

Yes. It is evil. Agree with everyone's advice above and if it's really burning get a jug of water and pour it over yourself as you go to the toilet. It really helps!
Be careful it doesn't get worse - any blood and go straight to doctor as you could end up with a kidney infection.

As soon as you start getting 'the burn' ....

Take 2 painkillers and drink 2 pints of water straight away. The trick is to turn your urine into 'water' ie so dilute it doesn't sting, and to flush the bacteria out. Get thee to the chemist and get cranberry pills. Apparently they work altering the lining of your bladder etc so the e coli causing the infection can't stick on.

I know this is a bit eeuw, but pee into a beer glass and hold up to the light. If it is cloudy keep an eye on it.

If you get to feel cold and shivery OR start getting pain in your lower back get yourself to a doctor asap as that means the infection is getting out of control and you need antibiotics.

Ooohr, it's giving me the shivers remembering... don't stop drinking.

Cogito is right, if left untreated, it can become very serious. Don't bother with anything other than antibiotics IMO.

When you are drinking loads, add a teaspoon of bicarb to every glass of dilute squash. It reduces the acidity of your urine, and helps stop/prevent the bugs growing.

The powder from the chemist, 'mist pot cit' made me sick last time I had to try it, the bicarb trick never did.

Hadn't had it for years until I had to have a scan, and the internal one must have been a little too enthusiastic and I was bruised.

I suffer with severe recurrent cystitus and kidney infections (well I did before they got treated in the following way!) and the GP prescribes me enough cefalexin that I can self medicate (even during pregnancy) as and when I need to...(been to see urologist at the hospital etc etc, had scans etc)...

If you have cystitus don't mess about with anything other than antibiotics, if it's a genuine infection rather than just an irritation all you are doing is prolonging the time before you need to take the antibiotics.

My urologist did tell me that one of the weirdest but best working things to do (that apparently he's not supposed to tell anyone to do!) is to drink two shots of very strong expresso followed by a glass of coke before bedtime... If the caffine doesn't keep you awake it will concentrate the urine and hence the infection and the fizzy of the coke helps to keep the infection away from the bladder wall so you can wee it out easier the next morning. I've done this in conjunction with cefalexin a few times and it does seem to work (random I know).
