Does anyone know how this works? Husband left, pays half of mortgage , we only own a third of our house . Has now refused to give any other money for the children who are 17 and over or to help me. I work a lot of hours but not on a big wage. He rents a private flat gets good money and djs on the side., drinks and smokes loads. It just seems unfair, we were married 23 yrs . Maybe now the children aren't small he doesn't have to give anything !

Not an expert, sorry, but I think he does have to support them until they're 18 as long as they're in full-time education. Not sure if paying towards the mortgage counts (surely that is just to maintain his interest in the property, that he still jointly owns even if he doesn't live there? Not the same as child maintenance?). It might be worth a quick trip to your local CAB to find out your rights. Also have a rummage on the CSA/Directgov websites. And have you tried posting in the MN Legal section?
