Can you ever be friends with your ex?

Obviously when you have children together thats different but what i want to know is if you've been together for a while, dont have kids together but have realised there are problems as in you dont spend enough time together or go out as a couple. So you break up. Can you be friends with your ex? Would it take time apart from eachother to help? Should you start by talking in general? What do you do?

I'm only friends with one ex from a long, long time ago (teenager times). I know some people can be very friendly with exes, popping round to houses, going on holidays together and asking them to godparent the cat or whatever... but if I break up with someone it's usually because I can't stand them any more.
