Very Odd Sister - What would you do?

My sister was due to come and stay for the weekend from abroad. She rang to invite herself and we said fine and agreed to come back from holiday early to meet her in the city. She rang to say she had missed her flight and would be a day late. We were already committed to leaving a day early so left anyway. The original plan was for her to meet us at our flat, probably arriving an hour or two before us. During the day she began texting as we journeyed home, eventually saying that unless we would drive 3 hours today to pick her up from the airport (through 2 cities) she was not coming. She had been due to get the train - 40 mins very comfortable and easy. She has accused me of not loving her and of depriving my children of the chance to see her. Alcohol maybe involved but what would you do? She didn't turn up and instead flew somewhere else - not sure where. Advice? She is a bit of a toddler and am inclined to ignore but she is alone and lonely so still feel sorry for her.

Love that poor me saying. Never heard that before. Thanks so much for your very kind words. My husband is making me stay strong and described me as trotting along behind trying to keep her happy which I will no longer do. Brownie guide promise.

She sounds like my aunt. I don't think my aunt has an issue with alcohol but she definitely expects everyone else to bend over backwards for her and if they don't she turns on the 'no one cares about me'.

This week my aunt expected me to drive my mum, children and dogs to her for one day (this is a 7 hour round trip). We did this in the summer and it was fine but we were busy the particularly day she wanted us to come. She wanted us on that day as it coincided with a visit from her daughter. Mum said she's been inundated with texts from her (including one from her daughter) saying how disappointed she is and can't we come etc. The amount of pressure she puts on us makes me want to say, "No, never again!" but makes my mum want to drive herself there and book into a hotel overnight!

My aunt got divorced about 20 years ago and still seems to expect us all (including her children) to be looking after her. She continuously claims ill health and poverty. She is unable to work but goes on loads of holidays and has just bought another brand new car. She phones my mum with long, rambling details of illness and problems with work etc but when mum questions her (because she can't remember everything she says) she gets very aggressive and abusive. I think she's in a spiral of debt and that's what makes her feel ill.

Anyway, I think she needs toddler treatment so I'm sure you did the right thing not to go.

For some people perhaps being single makes them behave as children would and expect attention for bad and demanding behaviour. Maybe because they don't have to make the compromises necessary in a relationship or because not having another adult in their lives makes them emotionally teenagers.

Instead I have discovered that she went to visit another sister where she will definitely not get picked up at the airport and where you get a train to the city centre and then a taxi! So strange. Maybe she is too posh for British public transport but Ok with overseas.

she sounds rather unhinged. She tried to cause a drama at yours - you didnt rise to the occasion so she went elsewhere. Seemples. Grin

Just ignore any potential nastiness, be polite but dont pander to her nonsense.
