Last night about 11.45pm I receive a text off an unknown number. I read it and it's DP (I know this because the message contained an in-joke that only me and him know. The message was obviously meant for me, and nobody else.
What is concerning me is - what's with the strange number??

He has recently changed his phone but I have both his old number and his new one. This number was totally different. I played dumb and text back saying "who is this??" and he has not replied again.

He does have form for lying, sneaking around, dating sites etc. If he can't explain this one it will be nail in the coffin for us. Am I being harsh?

OP posts:
QueenCess · 09/03/2012 10:12

I think she meant that she knew the text originated from him owing to the language used but the text wasn't for her owing to the time it was sent and the number used.

Therefore she is wondering who else he has this level of familiarity with.

It is not looking good.

Send him copy of the text. Asked him why you have got onenfrom this number at a time he was otherwise engaged and why he has denied sending it. Tell him you are worried your phone has been compromised and are going to investigated exactly where the text originated from and when. Bet he back peddles then.....

Personally I wouldn't bother wasting the time and energy on a liar.

PooPooInMyToes · 09/03/2012 10:56

When you text his usual number to say he had text you from the wrong phone last night . . . If it wasn't his phone then he wouldn't have known what you were talking about rather then having a cover story all ready about it being an old text message.

Does that make sense?

mojitomania · 09/03/2012 11:04

Did it ever look good OP? Nails should have been in the coffin a long time ago and it laid to rest. Silly girl Sad

BettyPerske · 09/03/2012 12:08

'When you text his usual number to say he had text you from the wrong phone last night . . . If it wasn't his phone then he wouldn't have known what you were talking about rather then having a cover story all ready about it being an old text message.'

Yes perfect sense, Gosh he is such a thicko! He's tripped himself over really badly.

I wouldn't waste any time tyring to find out who it was meant for, or to get the truth out of this geezer. I'd just give him the look of disdain I reserve for total twunts and refuse to have any more to do with him.

Wrongbow · 09/03/2012 12:10

Get rid and thank your lucky stars you've done so before moving in together.

OlympicEater · 09/03/2012 12:14

What poopoo said

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 09/03/2012 12:17

He can't even lie consistently. Dump the twat and find a decent bloke.

Busybusybust · 09/03/2012 12:20

I don't understand this. Why would he have put OP's number into this phone if it was a 'secret' one?

SophieNeveu · 09/03/2012 12:22

he will have saved number to phone, made calls from two sims, the two phines dont have to be physical, one can be an interchangable sim between the one phone!

BettyPerske · 09/03/2012 12:31

He might have used a sim reader thing to put all his contacts on the new phone, including OP's, and not intended to use it from the new phone.

He's not bright whatever he's done.

Maybe it is one of those mysteries we will never get the answer to.

munkeychops · 09/03/2012 13:46

Could you put what the original message said? Might help.

It sounds dodgy to me though, I have a history of dealing with this kind of rubbish. The most suspicious thing isn't the text (although obviously that rings alarm bells), it's his responses since. Why did he suddenly switch from pretending not to know who you are to saying it was another number he had been using? Sounds like when you text his other number he felt he had been rumbled so changed tack.

The problem is, it can be quite difficult to nail him on something like this. Perhaps you could make out you believe him and leave it for a good few days and when you are next round his, say that you want to have access to the phone/sim there and then to see what is on it to ease your mind? Might not work, but worth a try.

Do you have access to his email and things like that? (snoopy, I know)

munkeychops · 09/03/2012 13:48

busybusy - I thought that. OP, why would he have saved your number into a secret phone? And if he did, when you text "who is this" it surely would have came up as from you? Does he know your number off by heart? What kind of an in joke are you talking about? Maybe he uses it with someone else too?

Flisspaps · 09/03/2012 13:49

Don't bother with snooping (as per munkeychops's suggestion)

Ultimately if you don't trust him, and you think he's lying then what's the fucking point?

Bin him off.

Jokat · 09/03/2012 14:01

My DH has read this can shed some light, while texting a friend about the football during the week, his friends reply came back from a totally different number. DH replied asking "Whose This ?" because the comment fitted in with what they had said and it turns out that it was iMessage on the iPhones that caused this. He has also had this with another friend of his. Does he have an iPhone ?

Jokat · 09/03/2012 14:06

When he replied, it showed up on his phone from a number rather than a contact in his phone, so confusion all round.

MrsHoolie · 09/03/2012 14:16

My DP and a friend have recently got new iPhones and although they have kept their old numbers when they texted me the number was random.
It doesn't explain why your DP would deny sending a text though Hmm

carmenelectra · 09/03/2012 14:24

Think its quite simple what has happened.

The text was meant for OP, he texted the right number as he has OP's numbers saved to his phone.

However, he clearly has another SIM. He probably puts this SIM in to contact other women and then switches back to old Sim. On this occasion he was careless and forgot.

He is acting all dense cos he is shitting himself that he has been rumbled.

Clownsarescary · 09/03/2012 14:42

Carmen I'll go with that theory.

OP listen up.

Jokat · 09/03/2012 14:50

Maybe I'm being naive, but if he doesn't realize that he can appear as a random number rather than a contact on OP's phone, he won'thave been able to explain it and may have come up with the old-text explanation as a way of trying to avoid trouble. If, OP, you've also got an iphone and he received your text from a random number also (the one saying "You texted me last night"), it would explain why he replied with "Did I??"

swallowedAfly · 09/03/2012 14:54

iphones sound shitty.

coffeeinbed · 09/03/2012 15:03

No, texting is shitty.

adamschic · 09/03/2012 15:05

Come to think of it. I bought a new Samsung Galaxy Ace. I transferred my old number to it. An old friend got in touch and we arranged to meet up. I text him on the day to ask if he'd arrived and he text back 'who is this'? Hmm. When I said me he replied 'oh I didn't recognise the new number'.

I didn't think anything off it at the time but wondered what he meant as he had rang and text me on the only number I use the day before etc.

It's only reading this thread that has made me remember it.

RecursiveMoon · 09/03/2012 15:07

Ah, I was going to say the iPhone iMessage thing. I don't fully understand it yet though, can someone explain it again? Blush

bushymcbush · 09/03/2012 15:08

Me and dh have had iPhones for years. This has never ever happened. Also the cover story about an old text when he's pleading total ignorance on the other number - he's in it up to his neck OP. Don't let him get away with it.

SarahStratton · 09/03/2012 15:31

Yup, the DDs, XH, DSis and I all have iPhones, and we've never experienced anything like this. I think carmen has got it right, and it's time to say goodbye.
