had a scare......coil/depo advice.......

i know this has been discussed before cause i,ve had a look at the threads but just wanted to see if anyone had some up to date advice for me...good and bad......

bit of background..sorry if it tmi!!!! partner and i use condoms-hes very responsible with them and it suits both of us......however i had a scare earlier in year when i was late so i went to gp and she gave me mini pill which was awful-breakthrough bleeding,moodswings etc ,changed to a different one but no better so she said i would have to go to family planning clinic....
didnt bother just kept on using condoms...

anyway i have just had another scare-week and half late with my period-it started this am....that was a relief....

SO off i went to family planning clinic............had a long chat with nurse.......she is recommending merina(dont think i,m spelling that right) coil......

my one big concern is that a friend got one fitted at start of summer and had a horrible time with one infection after another............also if i react so badly to mini pill then might i do the same with coil???

i would cope if i fell pregnant but really really dont want to >>>>>>>>>>>>>>but dont want side effects of drugs etc either????????? any advice????

Most places would do a swab to check for infection before they put a mirena in. It is only suitable for long term relationship as it will not prevent infections like condoms do.

Erratic bleeding is common at first, tends to settle. I have had one for 2.5 yrs approx and get on with it fine, I couldn't stand the mini pill either.

They can take it out if you are hating it, but generally they want you to get it at least 3-4 months to settle down before you decide.

Some people have bad experiences with the mirena, some people find it great. I'm one of the latter. Took a month or two to settle, but ever since not a problem, no periods, levelled out my mood. You could always have it removed if it wasn't for you.

There's always the normal coil or vaginal ring for non-hormonal methods.

ta guys nice to hear some positives bout it cause all i hear are negative ones!!! cant remember why now but we did discuss the non hormonal coil and nurse didnt think it a good idea for me......
i guess i,ll have to b a grown up and have a chat with him bout it and see wot he thinks...so far i havnt brought anything up bout it cause he always seems happy just to use condoms............(and its less messy!!!!!!!!!)

another concern is having to have breakthrough bleeding etc for a couple of months........dont want that over christmas and then we going away in early new year so dont want hol messed up...........

Whoever invented the Mirena IUD deserves a medal IMO. I've had one (well, 3) in the last 17 years bar a gap when had DD2 I've and hardly ever had spotting. I had 12 day periods with the regular copper 7 IUD and have had no periods for all of the time I've had a Mirena. If you are in a permanent relationship - i.e. no need for condoms for STDs then it's great. Husband loves it! Tiny amount of localised progesterone release so low side effects. The only prob may be if you haven't had children yet, having it inserted may be uncomfortable as your cervix won't be quite as stretchy. They do it during your period though, when your cervix is more open. Good luck

Bad experience here with the coil. I had it taken out after 2mths as it caused an infection & the pain was so bad that I almost dropped my dd who was then only 6mths.

depression
constant hunger
pain
headaches
constant pain in my uterus

After I had it taken out, for 6mths I would be in pain each time I ovulated (never even felt it before) and had very heavy, very painful periods!

Not keen on the coil myself...I recently went on the evra patch. Been on it before and it's great! You put a patch on, change it every week for three weeks then leave it off for a week. Love it.

I was on the mini pill before...with me I found as long as I took it every day at the same time, I didn't get bleeding, but if I was a few hours late, I would.
