Worried that now I have a partial denture my love life is over

Hi, The title says it all really, I'm 42, single mum to two teens and had to have a partial denture fitted about 6 months ago,

I always had good strong teeth but 20 years ago my front 4 ones were knocked out by my kids dad, there was enough of the teeth left for me to have crowns fitted, they lasted a few years but after a while had to have a bridge fitted, it was replaced once because it became loose, had that one for about 10 years,

For the last 3 years ive had constant gum infections above one of the teeth that was mine but held the bridge in place, i was told that the tooth had to be removed so the bridge had to go and the only option was a partial denture,

Since I've had it ive had no more gum trouble but I hate the way it makes me feel, I am so embarresed by it, I can never imagine getting close to anyone and them finding out or seeing me without it,

I am worried about kissing and all that stuff, If i meet someone do i tell them up front or wait till we get close, how do people in this situation handle it?

I have to take it out to sleep, ( very sexy ) I cannot eat with it in as it moves and ive tried all the adheasives but they make me gag,

I know there are lots of worse things that people have to deal with but this is stopping me from moving on with my life, fgs im only 42, Ive dealt with all sorts over the years but this has knocked my confidence to zero.

I know there are other options ie implants but i could never afford that so it is not an option,

Just wondered if anyone out there has been in this situation and if so how did you overcome it?

Your denture shouldn't move. Sounds like it's not fitting great. You might be able to have it relined or adjusted somehow

I would suggest a dental appointment to chat it through
Lots of people have partial dentures any man worth it won't care ( might not even notice )

blackheartsgirl · 24/12/2016 23:30

I'm glad this thread was resurrected. I will have to have a partial denture to replace my front teeth and it's something I'm dreading

sammyjayneex · 05/01/2017 11:53

Just found this thread! I was looking for threads as I'm going through the same thing with my teeth. I'm only 28... I'm worried having my teeth removed will be make me look 10 years older. I can't afford implants... I never will and will never able to get credit either

Kirstythomas119 · 07/01/2017 21:33

I have partial denture...... do I need to remove them at night or can they stay in?? Keep getting mixed answers?? Can anyone help me out? It's absolutely ruined what little confidence I had. I'm 39 years of age and had dentures for about 4 months now. And still struggle everytime I look in the morrow i break down in tears.

Mouseinahole · 07/01/2017 22:29

I have had a partial denture since I was 12 years old. Originally it had two teeth but now there are 7. I have never taken it out at night. I put it in Steradent when I'm in the shower then rinse and replace. I am now 72! I have been married three times, most recently for 28 years, very very happily. I really haven't had any problems at all with it.

drinkswineoutofamug · 07/01/2017 22:33

I too have a partial denture, top teeth. Having kids ruined my teeth with all the morning sickness. I'm probably in a few weeks will get my bottom middle teeth done to.

Heatherjayne1972 · 08/01/2017 08:25

They should come out at night yes
You need to soak them in the right solution too
And make sure you clean them off after eating

Kirstythomas119 · 08/01/2017 08:44

Thankyou for your feedback 😊

Hi op it's not the same as your situation but similar. I had to have crowns on my front teeth due to erosion of enamel.i've hated them ever since they were done and am too scared to go through the pain of replacing them. They needed doing at the time though or I would not have any front teeth now! No body notices but I don't think they suit my teeth at all it's not helping my confidence and I hate smiling with my teeth Grin

FK101 · 10/01/2017 22:02

Thanks too for getting this post up again. I'm too having 4 from teeth extracted next week due to an infection🙁 and then having a partial fitted whilst it heals then am fortunate to have saved some money from doing extra work to get implants. But am dreading having the partial.. So nervous that I won't be able to speak properly and everyone will notice. I'm taking 5 days off work so am just hoping I can get back to normal. Any tips on whether you can resume life as normal soonish? More worried about the speaking.. Happy to eat soft food for a while. Also I do like to exercise and run etc and am paranoid that it will fall out whilst I'm doing sit ups in a class! Thanks and good luck to you all

Hi can anyone help I'm 49 and I have really suffered badly with my teeth for at least 15 years now , I've always looked after my teeth but for whatever reason I have been so unlucky , I have lost all my side top teeth and I feel like my life is over and I'm depressed that much that I'm afraid of interacting with the outside world , I'm at despair and so low I just can't handle it anymore , I took my partner for a drink one night and was jibed about my teeth and that night I went home and broke down in tears ( I'm a man by the way) but this has completely ruined my life , I'm so low I don't know what to do anymore please help

Manred9898 · 19/02/2017 11:18

My words fail me how someone can say nasty things , do they not realise the torment I'm going through

KatieScarlett · 19/02/2017 11:21

DH has one. This thread has probably been the only time in years I've even thought about it.

RockyBird · 19/02/2017 11:22

I have a partial denture and only remove it for cleaning.

It has not bothered any of my partners in the 20 odd years I've had it.

drdental72 · 14/03/2017 23:25

yeah I feel exactly the same .i'm a man of 44,and a year ago ,I too had partial denures,I too cant bear to eat with them in.it is so embarrassing to have to take them out.i like glamourous women, but yeah I think my chances of finding love again like this is out the window

bexsterrh22 · 29/03/2017 19:59

I saw this and thought I would weigh in. I was born with a genetic condition which means my teeth were atrocious. When I was in my early 20s I had my bottom teeth removed and implants and bridges fitted and veneers and a partial denture on the top. This was done on the NHS at Leeds dental hospital. I was offered implants on the top jaw but declined due to needing a bone graft and by that point I had had enough surgery. My denture has never bothered me it fits perfectly fine and I try and take it out at night. I have had plenty of relationships since then and not one single man cared less, my eldests dad even helped me find it one night I gota wee bit too drunk and it came out when I was sleeping. As far as I am concerned my teeth look amazing compared with how they used to look and look a lot better than most other peoples I know. It isn't worth worrying about, I mean our bodies are just bodies and are bound to break and need fixing occasionally, nobody goes through life unscathed. We all have scars. Noone who is worth their sapt is going to be bothered about any of that. If I met a guy and he had a problem with that then he isn't worth my time of day. My current partner loves me not because of what I look like but loves me and that is what you want someone who will be there through anything. If they are scared of a little denture then how on earth are they going to deal with well life. I'm 31 now btw.

Tigerlovingall · 29/03/2017 22:49

Another shout out for those chrome plate thingies here from meSmile
I needed mine after quite brutal chemo 14yrs ago . It saved my life, but my teeth were collateral damage.
So, some top teeth fell out or had to be removed and also some bottom.
After the extractions of the stumps I had NHS plastic hobbies fitted, then found a denturist who made the chrome jobbies I still wear.
No problems eating/smiling, I clean them and then they're straight back in.
The difference between having the plastic palette X the thin chrome ones is chalk and cheese,
Go for it! My denturist offered payment by instalments btw. I didn't need that, but the option was there.

Tigerlovingall · 29/03/2017 23:06

Btw, for those of you who have said that they think their chances of finding love again are zero, bollocks!
I mentioned above that I lost teeth after chemo? The chemo came after breast cancer surgery - both breasts.
So here I am, no frontal bumps, mouthful of a mix of real and false teeth, and, guess what? Newish relationship going strong after 5 years.
I'm happy with poor battered and cut about me, and so is he.
My message to you'all is believe in yourself and others will too.

msfarley · 25/02/2018 21:22

Hi Jasper wondering where do you make the dentures and are they flexible

LiquidCosh · 25/02/2018 21:45

Hi Ms i'm 35 and have had a partial top denture for around three years now, its made of metal. It is completely natural feeling now although at the beginning it did take a bit of getting used to!
Are you having one?

dizzy174 · 25/02/2018 21:54

i have dentures at the top. private so cost a fortune but as someone said I will get my monies worth out of them as I wear them every day :)

worldinmyeye · 26/02/2018 22:13

Hello Everyone. So there is my story. I'm 33, Soon I have to remove all my teeth, top and bottom due to my pregnancy, medicines what I take for my high blood pressure what effect in a really bad gum disease. We try many solutions, unfurtunatelly there is no choice and I have to go for full dentures, which I'm fine with. I feel confident enough to talk about it and not hide my problem as obviously is visible to anyone Wink. My dentist adviced to keep my natural teeths in my mount as long as possible and scared me a little saying is a huge decision and my life would be change. He said they will fit temporary dentures but they can not adjust them for the first 6months due to gum shrink and healing process. Dentures will go loose, sometimes they my go out.. I go to dentist on NHS, I'm not complaining, just mentioned. Is this true? He try to scared me off or that's reality, I can't not imagine myself wonder for 6monts or longer if my dentures will fly away from my mouth. How long my speech would be affected? Talking is an most important part of my job.. Anyone can advice regard to adjustment and speach? How do you coope with it? I will have to remove them for sleeping or they can be left overnight? Anyone can suggest what dentures are the best, I mean material, plastic, metal? Thanks

Kristi01 · 22/08/2018 21:27

Thanks to this post I am feeling alot better about a partial denture I am having to have due to 4 of my front teeth knocked out (DV).
I have been feeling pretty low about this but the bright side is that they will be lovely and straight..!x
All of the advice given on this post has been most comforting especially the eating and sleeping.
