What the f**k is a Renaissance Man? And do I really want to go out with one?

Sigh. I'm on Guardian Soulmates and the level of pretentiousness is starting to do my head in. Surely it can't just be me who finds online dating completely pants. Come share your tales of virtual woe with me.

SpareOhs, I suspect the mahoosive email guys are using a template and slotting in the occasional personalised bit. Like "I am extremely passionate about all things arts and culture, and your reference to made me realise that you, too, realise the pain of being different in a world of comformity.

atswimtwolengths · 18/06/2011 13:26

Think of the middle-class version of "Bit of this, bit of that..."

SpareOhs · 18/06/2011 13:27

Tortoise, normally I would agree with you but to be fair this one was very specific... didn't make it any more appealing though!

I do think GSM is the best of a bad bunch but...it is all rather wearying.

Perhaps we should have this thread as a GSM-specific dating support thread! Grin

There are a few of them (with that name) on GS - is he the one who likes sewing?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/06/2011 13:33

Ah well, then I will go to Answer Two: you are not obliged to compensate someone for time you didn't ask him to spend.

If you reply, he'll reply, and then it'll just get worse and more awkward, and this time next year you'll be walking up the aisle thinking FFS.

SpareOhs · 18/06/2011 13:36

Tortoise - ROFL! You are, of course, completely right. I shan't bother Grin

Cats...just mention the cats....sorry for my late reply but Winston, one of my 10 persian blues, was sick on the keyboard.....

They will run for the hills....

Well I have a date tomorrow night...

He is neither a Renaissance Man, nor a Proustian Hero, but the television producer of a day-time game show.

Hmm. We'll see.

Well, we shall expect a full post-mortem, MYODD!

I had a couple of dates last week with a v. nice GSM chap but sadly there was absolutely no spark. And he was smaller than me and hadn't been entirely truthful about it :shallow:

And sometime this week (when ds gets over his chickenpox!) I am supposed to be seeing a 6ft Scottish teacher... so I'll keep you posted.

FingandJeffing · 18/06/2011 14:37

Tortoise, that made me laugh out loud :)

I always imagined the gsm section to be like their jobs bit, lots of media and lots of public sector. I guess the city types have something in the telegraph (or private eye).

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2011 05:19

How'd it go, MakeYer?
