It may not be H, carla. There is a yahoo group I occasionally look at (entirely innocent, it's the Archers!) and always when I click on the first picture I want to look at I get a porn site - always the same one, it's called xxx something.

I suppose if yours is popping up all over the place it might be different - I don't understand these things, can you tell?

They do though, don't they? They insinuate themselves into other things, like viruses and worms and spyware and ad things?

Do you ever run ad-aware or spybot?

I agree with Jan. Spybot stopped all that rubbish for me. Don't blame DH, as Jan says, it might not be something asked-for.

Janh · 16/11/2005 22:24

Downloads here:

adawareSE

spybot search and destroy

We have them both, nothing finds everything but these are both good.

FWIW Microsoft do a VERY good and free anti spyware product. Still in beta (not finished) release - they basically bought a company that makes this stuff and rebadge it then give it away.

Sits in your computer and checks whats going on. Better than many others because they only scan when you tell them to. MS stuff watches in real time - assuming you switch it on......

Blame DH anyway but seriously you get viruses that hide in your system and then allow other stuff to download or popup on your computer. its like cookies so everytime you do something it recognises you are there. Porn wormholes are even worse everytime you close down a screen another 2 open until you have 20+ on the go and some you can't shut at all . That happened after going on the Sun paper site. (I was doing genuine research honest .

I have just about got rid of a virus that even norton couldn't shift, I think I have mucked up some of the opporating system and I still have a thing called suef accuracy to get rid of which keeps bring up ad's all the time.

Shazzler · 16/11/2005 22:36

Well let me see....
If it wasn't you who else has access?

Shazzler · 16/11/2005 22:39

There's some very clever software out there.
If youre very brave and some sort of mega geek then go to google and do a search for root kits.
VERY SCARY. And you really need to know what you're doing and have an understanding of how how software works - particularly API calls.

Not for the faint hearted.

gingerbear · 16/11/2005 22:40

get a Mac - ask hub2de
I was plagued with spyware on PC.
AdawareSE was v good.

Janh · 16/11/2005 22:44

skribble, we've got one which Norton can't shift, any advice?

Hi, anorak (sorry, DS2 turfed me off at that point to print some homework) - I was somewhat shattered, luckily my kids get themselves out in the morning, how about you?

anorak · 16/11/2005 22:45

Yes, fine, but can't have another tonight. I'm off to bed now...nighty night all

Janh · 16/11/2005 22:45

carla, if the email came to you it can't have been H, can it?

Shazzler · 16/11/2005 22:46

Download another one
Grisoft do a free one.
FAR better than norton IMHO...

Janh · 16/11/2005 22:49

blimey, that was spooky - I just clicked on the "download.trojan" link on the Norton Virus alert advisory box and what should pop up but the "Free XXX gallery"

Skribble · 16/11/2005 22:51

The virus was download.trojan. The virus checker found it. I tried going to the Norton website and followed the instructions but theis failed. I found the file it was hiding in and tryed to delete it but it said no it is a system file acces denied. Silly naive me thought oh it will be fine its only a little file and monkeyed about with the permission bit of the file. I think I right clicked and went it to properties (I thinK). It seems to have gone well the norton warning box doesn't come up now and the full system scan didn't find it. I still need to get rid of Surf accuracy.

With norton you have to let it update its virus definitions every week along with a full system scan.

Skribble · 16/11/2005 22:52

Janh you got the sam thing then!
