Does anyone know..if you use the function on Facebook to 'not show posts by x'..can you still read any personal messages/chat messages they send you on Fbk - or do you nor see any?

Yes you can. You are not blocking them, you are just not seeing their updates.

SingOut · 08/06/2011 18:46

Yeah, you're simply hiding their news feed stuff. To truly block them you can go to a link usually bottom left hand corner on their profile, this will make you invisible on facebook to them and visa versa. You'll be removed as friends as well when you block someone.
Hiding someones updates can be helpful if they bore you or piss you off but you don't want to remove or block them.

lifeohlife · 09/06/2011 07:53

okay..I don't want to necessarily block them... is there a way of me posting on fbk..being on it IUSWIM, without them knowing I am on it (I dnt necessarily want to defriend them but would rather just go invisible for a while, tho I nd to keep in contact with other friends and so will need to post). Will my profile pic pop up on their computer as 'on fcbk'...is there not a way of disabling this so they dnt see me being online? (sorry, am not very good at this technology stuff)

I think if you make a group called limited friends, you can choose to appear offline to them. The instructions are (I think) on the facebook privacy policy page.

I thought I had done this - have a distant acquaintance who comments and likes everything I ever post, and it is creeping me out a bit but I don't want to defriend (old friend of the family), so I would rather be invisible. I must not have done it right as she has just commented on yet another photo.

Bizkit · 09/06/2011 08:02

I have my friends in lists. You can chose to appear offline to certain lists and also prevent them from seeing what you post. Go into edit friends and I think its there you can create the lists, then go into your privacy settings and customise, on each option add your list to not see it

lifeohlife · 09/06/2011 08:12

Thanks..just one more question..when you say 'appear offline', in the chat pop up menu box, you CAN tick this option but you are still up on their computer (albeit offline) so if they try to chat you, it says something like 'x is offline, your msge will be sent to their Inbox'. But what i want is for my pic just not to show up..go 'invisible on fbk if u like, but still be able to post as opposed to them knowing that I am 'offline' but still on it. Does this make sense? Or am I being completely thick here?

you can make your profile pics for friends only except X, but your chosen profile pic you can never hide. you can switch off your fb profile being searchable on the internet. just put x into a limited profile. do this in privacy and block them out of xyz. theres no reason why you can stop them looking at your whole fb page just take off their access - whilst keeping them a friend. just click around in privacy and customise, and account and all the tabs. its all in there

Bizkit · 09/06/2011 09:18

Errm, in the chat box on the right hand corner you should have your lists you created, next to them there is a little box that you can click, if it's green your showing online to that particular list if it's grey you not, e.g I am usually appearing offline to my limited profile they don't see me. They will only see your profile pic if they go on your actual profile unless you customise your privacy settings so they can't see it, hth.
Sorry don't know what DB is

waspbee · 09/06/2011 09:20

you cant hide your profile pic to friends . you cant even hide yourself fully from someone youve blocked. if they go into a friends friend list and you are on it they will see it
