If you are on benefits you can actually go into the court and pick up the papers and fill them all in yourself. No solicitor needed and I think it costs next to nothing.Thats of course if its straightforeward and your STBEx is amicable and agreeable with the finances and the children etc.Heres the link with all the info

If there is no property together and no children, just go to your local county court and file the papers. It is free.

If you need a solicitor book to see one, it will also be free.

If you're on benefits you'll qualify for legal aid which would be free upfront. AFAIK If you are awarded any money or property in the settlement you will have to pay towards the fees out of that, but you can put it on the mortgage in such a way that you will only have to pay it back when you sell. It accrues interest though.*

*Disclaimer have only done brief minimal research on this, hope I've got it right.

The legal board might be helpful too.
