I had a similar thibng happen to me. I dialled 1471 and pressed 3. A woman answered and i said, "Hi, i am returning your call". She said she diodn't call me so i said OK must be a wrong number.

Then she called me back and asked me who i was. I said politely i think you or somebody there must have dialled the wrong number.

The Lady was asking me how i got her number and i explained again that it was she or somebody there that called me.

30 minutes later she called me back asking me who i was - i refused to tell her my name etc. I just got the gist that her husband/boyfriend was cheating and i told her he isn't cheating with me!

I felt scared that she might trace my number and fight me!!

Must have been scary for your Mother. hugs xx

laInfanta · 12/04/2011 00:11

How on earth did she mistake an 87 year old's voice for someone her husband could potentially be having an affair with?

I love swearing at people (but am usually very restrained) and would have said something along the lines of 'fuck off you mad bitch'. Must have been unpleasant for your mother though

atswimtwolengths · 12/04/2011 17:23

I rang my brother at 10 pm once and misdialled part of the area code.

An hour later a woman rang back - she'd done 1471 and was obviously thinking someone was calling for her husband. She didn't believe me - I ended up giving her my brother's number and she called him to double check.

Although in one way I thought she was mad, in another I absolutely understood how crazy we can be when we suspect something's going on and can't prove it.

Yes!

Did your Brother think you were mad for giving her his number? LOL

atswimtwolengths · 13/04/2011 15:06

I had just texted him when she called!

It was a few years ago now but I still think of her - brave woman to do that, to call me and then call him. Now if it happened I'd tell her to get herself onto Mumsnet!

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 15:16

YES!! LOL x

Someone called once, mistakenly thinking I was a take-away restaurant...so I took his order and told him to come and collect in 10 minutes!

I was only about 15 at the time but still makes me laugh when I think of it.

OK
I'm om a roll

2 stories

When my ex p and i had our first flat i kep getting a call from a bloke asking for an Eddie. This went on for some time and the guy was very cross with me as i kept on telling him there is NO Eddie here!!

The last time we spoke after a few weeks i told him i was a police officer and would have his number traced etc.

The calls seemed to stop. My ex p came home and (as he worked long hours i had forgotten to tell him about the calls), he asked me if anybody had called for him and had i told them i was a police officer?

I said yes...but the call is for an Eddie... he said that is my first name.. the name you know me by is my middle name! It was one of his friends calling long distance.

Don't know if i should have admitted that here.

Second nuisnace caller was an Asian guy asking for a somebody and speaking in a language i couldn't understand and wouldn't stop calling.. i had to change my number because of him.

Champersonice · 14/04/2011 10:04

Youare, why did you change your number? Depending which provider you are with, they should be able to intercept the calls.

Wrong numbers can be quite funny but I also know that some can be damn annoying!

When I was a kid my dad would make me laugh whenever he answered a wrong call, he's conversations went something like this, "no, you must have the wrong number, but what did you want them for?" and another, "no, you have dialled a wrong number but you have a lovely voice". Sometimes, he would say, "yes, hold on and I'll get them" and then he would just leave the phone hanging. Bad? Yes, but did make us kids laugh!

Champersonice - This was in 1995, Telewest suggestion. Smile

We kept getting bomb threats. Hmm
And people asking about train times.

We had been given a number that used to belong to Kings Cross Station in London.

I once rang my Indian take away to place an order. As I didnt have the number on me, and I called from the car to have food delivered moments after getting home, I got their number off directories enquirers. The person on the other end kept insisting they were a dog walking service, and NO they could not bring me Chicken Korma with Pilau Rice.. Their company name? K9. I had obviously wanted K2!! doh!

k9 - dog walking service, get it?
k2 the mountain in the himalayas.....

Once had a woman abandon her car in the middle of my street blocking the traffic, she banged on my door and said why was I having an affair with her husband. She also kept calling me by the wrong name. Eventually managed to convince her that it wasn't me, although it was a bit scary for a time and she called her husband a lying bastard and drove off. Much curtain twitching going on that day!

Another time my DM got a phone call from a man saying how much he'd enjoyed making love to her the night before. My Mum let him go on for ages until he sussed he'd got the wrong number BlushGrin

SueSylvesterforPM · 14/04/2011 16:01

that can't have been nice for you're mother

tabulahrasa · 15/04/2011 09:52

oh my DP got a wrong number on his mobile once, said you've got the wrong number and hung up.

The man kept calling back getting more and more agitated, demanding to know why DP was answering his wife's phone - wouldn't have it that it was DP's phone and that he must have the wrong number

MrsVidic · 15/04/2011 10:03

My name in rl is shortened to a male name (think edwina shortened to Ed iyswim)

I always text female friends with a x on the end. A couple of years back I got my friend in trouble texting her she had left her dress at mine and asking her if she had had a good night and if she retreated going so far ( we had been for a run).

I promptly got a phone call from her now Dh asking who I was? As soon as he heard my accent he immediately appoligised and it's now a running joke
