Contraceptive Coil

Hi there, I am 21, and although I have not had any children I decieded the coil would be best for me as I have been with my boyfriend 6 years and we dont plan on having children for a good few years.

I had the coil fitted around 9 months ago and could never feel the strings before, I only have little fingers so I assumed that was why, as my boyfriend could feel them with his fingers and occasionally during sex. Now however, I can feel the strings quite close to the entrance of my vagina, not my cervix, and I am getting quite worried that it is not in the correct place. I can't feel the actual coil itself, just the strings. I dont see how it could have slipped out if place, as I havent had any children, and the doctor had difficulty getting it in there as I am quite 'tight.'

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as I cant get hold of my doctor until monday morning and I am just worrying myself about it all.

Thank you, Jenny

If I were you I would abstain from sex till Monday, then contact your local sexual health centre, or whoever put it in for you - they should be able to see you pretty quickly - my local one has a drop-in service.

It does sound like it's slipped but if you simply abstain till you can get it sorted you should be fine.

It can depend on where you are in your cycle as to how low your cervix is and if you can feel your strings - if your coil had become dislodged it would either have fallen out completely or it would have embedded itself on the way down and would be pretty uncomfortable I would imagine.
If you can only feel the strings while sitting on the loo it's probably fine. Wink

I had coils for almost 20 years.

Hi, thank you for all your advice. The nurse said the coil was in place, and the strings were just hanging down and I may not have been able to feel them before if they were to the side or tucked up. The pain has gone now, so I'm assuming it was just bad period pains. I feel alot better! :)
