Hi folks thinking of leaving my husband however with 3 young kids in tow really need to make sure i can afford to. I've read that if you have a mortgage you can't claim housing benefit. Is there anything I can claim to help with housing costs? I know I'd get council tax paid, working tax credits and child tax credits but still wouldn't be able to cover expenses. I'm currently working partime and about 14k. thinking of going into childminding in the future which would be self employed work . thanks in advance.

My freind has a mortgage and gets housing benefit . Initially it was classed as capital but its up for sale so its not an issue. Why not make an apointment at the cab / council office to do a calculation ?

Could you possibly afford to stay in the mortgaged property ?

Double check, but I don't believe the mortgage will make a difference, if you truly need the financial help, you will be means tested.
