Is it OK to wear a ring, when you're not engaged or married?

I don't want to break some unwritten (or indeed written!) code, but DP wants to get me a ring to wear because I like to have something to think of him, when I see it iyswim.

I wore an old one today and he asked me about it and I said it was to remind me of him when he wasn't here.

So he said he'd get me one. But I don't know if this is a bit silly - or if there is a certain finger I should wear it on, obv not wedding finger! and what sort of ring.

Is this a common thing, or are we being weird? I could of course drop heavy hints about getting hitched but it is rather early days for that Grin

Thanks Grace, I love second hand rings and will tell him this, it's my birthday soon so you never know.

Shiney - yes, that was him.

Sometimes these things work out, not that I would have guessed. It was a bit of a leap of faith.

Trace Smile

I haven't got mine yet! Sluggish bunch, what are they playing at. Did you get anything in the archive sale?

No - I've gone off toast to be honest - its just so expensive really for nothing that special.

Flighttattendant · 11/08/2010 21:47

I know - totally dull this year wasn't it. I've kind of got into it for one season, then straight out the other side! Grin

It annoyed me when all the clothes looked the same and they still ahd the cheek to charge millions of pounds for it.

If you want an eternity ring, new or second hand, I can't see why it would be a problem. When DH and I had been 'going out' for a year, he bought me an eternity ring and I chose to wear it on my ring finger. When we decided to get married, we never got engaged as we had to save for the wedding and to buy a house and anyway, I had my eternity ring. We've been married 27 years now and I only got an 'engagement' ring for our silver wedding. But as much as I love my rings, the most precious is still my eternity ring, even though it was by far the cheapest of the three!

Hope all goes well for you both.

Thankyou Smile your story is lovely.

He was going to go and get one today but I asked him to wait for my birthday in a couple of weeks, so it is special.

I hope we can go out together and find something nice and second hand. I really don't want an Argos one and if he chooses, he might get something I don't like, and doesn't fit, and I'll want to have it on every day so I'd best go with him.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. It's nice to have something happy to share after all this time.

It would only be a problem I guess if he were worried about what others might think.

I wear a ring on my ring finger... used to be the ring that DP bought me on our first xmas but it got sand and suncream in it so have taken to wearing another one on said finger as I feel lost without it. He always said that I could wearit on that finger until he could afford to propose with a proper ring.

Flighttattendant · 14/08/2010 13:12

That's lovely, AuntieMaggie Smile

He came round last night having been to the really posh jeweller's Shock not Argos! but though he had looked at the rings he didn't know my size, so I suggested we go back together and I can try one on.

He asked if I would lend him one of mine for sizing, but tbh none of them fit, so there's no point! Plus it would be nice to choose.

Thanks again Smile

'I am always fiddling about with engines and chickens'. What a great sentence! You sound too cool to care about something as mundane as a ring.

Lulumaam · 14/08/2010 17:52

how exciting ! wooooooooooooo!

seen some lovely rings by Pandora. not too £££ eitehr. have been looking myself, am hankering after an aquamarine.

Flighttattendant · 14/08/2010 18:14

Oh wow, I am not cool at all! I am a scruff! Smile but please, do hang on to that image and maybe it'll catch on and everyone will think I am really postmodern Grin

Lulu! I will have a look at Pandora, if it's on line? Aquamarine sounds really beautiful.
