tell me about DP/DH having breakdown

I think DP is having a breakdown. We have one child, 11 months, who was hospitalised for a while after the birth but fine now. I think DP has been having a breakdown for a long time, perhaps even before the birth, over his work (or long term lack there-of). It seems to now be in part worsened by the presence of a baby (who he is wonderful with, but it all seems to have got on top of him).
He's not living with me at moment, I asked him to leave over agressive behaviour two months ago, but we co-parenting (in supervised way) and in therapy trying to understand what's going on. He seems to be in a depression.
What can I do to help understand what he's going through? Can he get better?
Tell me your stories/advice.
