Oh, the guy with the Carribean-ish accent? Mmm, he sounds luverly. No idea what his name is.

frimblypoo · 09/08/2009 19:28

I don't know but he really has the most delicious voice. I'd like him on the satnav!

yappybluedog · 09/08/2009 19:30

'tis very annoying

Is it not Neil something? melliferous is the adjective used about him by his supporters when the objectors started on him.

notsoteenagemum · 09/08/2009 19:31

Don't know his name but if it's the one I'm thinking of I love him reading the shipping forecast.

Hassled · 09/08/2009 19:31

It's Caribbean mixed with Northern Irish, I reckon.

AitchTwoOh · 09/08/2009 19:31

nickytwotimes · 09/08/2009 19:32

Had a wee look on the website, but can't see anything.
What does he look like?

nickytwotimes · 09/08/2009 19:34

Ah, yes, that'll be him!
Love his voice. Can't believe some of the comments against him. Ffs. What's not to love?

although i thought the independent people were out of line (i think i've heard him, its a lovely voice in keeping with Radio4) bear in mind that the most under-represented group in the media is 50+ women. It would have been braver of the Beeb to get an older female voice....

msled · 09/08/2009 20:01

I think he was hired because he 'sounds' black. Tokenism. Most black people in the UK sound like everyone else - with London, Yorkshire, Birmingham, Welsh, whatever accents. And of course, on the radio, you can't tell colour. I think the BBC got in a funk about being 'too white' and got a voice that sounded black. I have been to Jamaica and white people there sound like this too. I doubt that anyone else with a 'foreign' accent (eg French/German/Italian) would have got a job as a continuity announcer. One of my friends is black and works in the media and he is constantly told he is 'not black enough' for jobs because he has a normal, not-posh but educated, southern-English voice.

EachPeachPearMum · 09/08/2009 20:08

I disagree msled- he was hired by world service who hire people from across the globe, then did some fill in on R4, who liked him, so kept him.

msled · 09/08/2009 20:11

Are there any other continuity announcers with accents from other countries? I don't think so.

notsoteenagemum · 09/08/2009 20:17

Is that relly him on twitter? He doesn't look like I imagined at all!
oneopinionatedmother R4 seems to be full of women who are or at least sound like older females, older than me anyway.

blithedance · 09/08/2009 20:19

Thank you! I have been wondering that for ages. Reminds me of when I first knew DH and he did charity radio...

lalalonglegs · 09/08/2009 20:19

He has a lovely voice; there are lots of people from the Caribbean living in UK - I don't really understand your problem with him msled. There have been Irish announcers and newscasters but I think it is unlikely that you would get people with French/German/Italian accents working as continuity announcers on the BBC because it is unlikely English would be their first language which kind of goes with the job... .

Incidentally, working as I have on several national papers, I think it is very unlikely that your friend is considered "not black enough" (much less told that) as certainly in print media, companies are desperate to appear more diverse than they actually are.

Bumperslucious · 09/08/2009 20:21

I'm astounded by the comments in the Independent. I cannot believe people really think like that!

Mintyy · 09/08/2009 20:25

Love him, love him, love him.

Would also like to hear and see more 50+ women on tv and radio. Was completely transfixed by Joan Bakewell on Desert Island Discs on R$ this morning. What an absolutely stellar person that woman is!
