no no no you are wrong Nicky Campbell and Sheila are genius together. Dotun very very good too so bright.
Victoria Derbyshire gets my goat very daily mail.
Richard Bacon is a bit of a prat but I thought his US election coverage great.
Simon mayo genius esp with Mark Kermode.
Have personal dab radio bought for many sleepless nights with children I am 5 addict.

Merrylegs · 01/12/2008 19:49

Agree with all above, esp Nicky Cambell. He's a bit too Mr Smoooth

I like Aasmah Mir.

Simon Mayo can be a bit cantankerous and unnecessarily bristly.

Find Mark Kermod a bit too laddy and knowing.

Like Victoria Derbyshire's programme best. Reckon you could have a good old chat with her. But she knows when to pull the plug.

fionaann · 01/12/2008 19:51

Moopy - you cannot be serious about Dotun? He struggles to string a sentence together. I used to listen to Breakfast R5 - Shelagh is nice and funny but not very insightful and not always that articulate. Nicky Campbell's ego is so great it intrudes too much in his interviews. I used to loathe Richard Bacon and he is still too much "me me me" but he is getting better. Simon Mayo is fab but I LOATHE Mark Kermode - do realise that I am in a minority in this respect.

fionaann - I agree on most of it - LOATHE tim lovejoy but actually quite like nicky campbell and shelagh - they sort of grow on you.

but most irritating of all is Eamoon Holmes on a saturday with that bloody traffic updated woman Lindsey hall/hipgrave butting in - whoever the hell thought she had something to say is wrong. It makes me so annoyed that actually thinking of writing to bbc about it..how sad am I (annoys me far more than russell brand ever did)

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 19:57

mark kermode likes sound of own voice
.. and doesn't listen -nicky campbell does have a sense of humour that balances his ego

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 19:58

moopy - I always think victoria darbyshire tries to be daily mail.. and you do get some hilarious callers - the phone in about hte new laws on not using trafficed woman was unintentionally amusing

moopymoo · 01/12/2008 20:04

Dotun is so well read and such a polyglot I am very surprised you say he cant string a sentence together! His knowledge of literature and poetry is so interesting. Though the world football stuff is a big yawn.
I just love the mayo/kermode dynamic and imagine them having christmas dinner together with their families. He is always completely spot on with the film reviews. Whats that other bloke that does up all night called? He is great too - i love that new york cabbie that gives the inside view of all things US and that Australian prof of everything always teaches me something (did you know that jellyfish are a great natural way of soaking up carbon emmissions and are blooming in vast quantities as the planet tries to hela itself? For example??)
Campbell is annoying on TV, granted, but great on radio. again, big brain.

moopymoo · 01/12/2008 20:04

thats heal itself...
god i am radio 5 saddo arent i

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 20:05

agree with moopy -upallnight was my saviour during night feeds.

Merrylegs · 01/12/2008 20:05

Oh OK I can say it now - I LOATHE Mark Kermode - but DH thinks he's great. I do think it's a laddy thing.

And now Lynsey Horn has started calling herself Lynsey Hipgrave does that mean she's married that bloke from Toploader who used to be married to Gail Porter?

moopymoo · 01/12/2008 20:08

i dont know but i thought it was funny that she was on Nuts Tv as well. not sure how i know that but 'horn'

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 20:09

grr.. I shouldnt have looked should I .... lynsey hall

RustyBear · 01/12/2008 20:26

Lynsey Horn/Hipgrave was married recently- came back from her honeymoon the other day.

I like Nicky Campbell & Sheila Fogarty together, he annoys me a bit on his own though.

I like Dotun Adebayo & enjoy Mark Kermode's diatribes, though I think he's less interesting when he actually likes something!

Also like Andrew Verity & Mickey Clarke toghether - Wake up to Money's never as good when one of them is missing.

I simply cannot listen to Steven Nolan for more than 30 seconds without yelling 'shut up you tosser' at the radio...

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 20:32

yes i know .. I was hoping she'd be away a bit longer

fionaann · 01/12/2008 20:50

Merrylegs - I was thinking that today and it's true - she has married Gail Porter's ex-husband.

Forgot to add Stephen Nolan to my very annoying list but can't comment on whether he has improved or not because I too can't listen to him for more than 30 seconds.

I do like Andrew Verity and Mickey Clarke but haven't heard them for ages since I moved to Today on R4.

I think Gaby Logan is great - especially when she has Phil Hammond and Clemency Burton Hill on. Frank Skinner was a great guest this week.

The reasons I loathe Mark Kermode - thinks he's wonderful but has a very limited use of English. Always saying "I'm sorry, but" "The thing is". The way Simon Mayo indulges him is very strange - with the ridiculous use of the phrase "the good doctor" just because he has a PhD - goodness knows how he ever got that. I assumed it was in Film Studies but some university found it appropriate to award him a PhD in English. Always going about the same things - not having had a TV, refusing to do a review of a film on the radio because he would be reviewing it first on Newsnight Review etc etc.

Dotun might know a lot but he really does struggle to string a coherent sentence together - even when he's plugging his show on the Richard Bacon programme.

Rhod Sharp, Nicky Campbell, Peter Allan.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 01/12/2008 21:07

I read that Simon Mayo was moving to Radio 2 because he dosen't want to uproot his family when R5 moves to Manchester

love simon mayo

Merrylegs · 01/12/2008 21:28

Fighting Talk is supremely annoying. They might be making the wittiest observations in the world (indeed there does seem to be a lot of self-congratulatory guffawing going on) but all I can here is that irritating loud dinging noise.

Unlistenable.

fionaann · 02/12/2008 09:42

Presenters I miss : Fi Glover, Matthew Bannister, Jane Garvey

I agree that Fighting Talk can be annoying but I do find it funny.

Annoying presenters : Colin Patterson - not ready to step up to standing in for presenters who are away.

Love campbell on the radio but hate him on tv.
I miss Jane Garvey.
Love Peter Allen - grumpy old bugger.
Love Simon Mayos whole programme. Kermode can be annoying but his reveiews are always spot on. I saw Pans Labyrinh on his strong recommendation and it is my fav film ever.

Absoloutely love Gary Richardsons sports prog on Sunay am. Always gets the very very best people to interview and actually asks the questions you want him to ask.
Tim Lovejoy - laddish wanker

fionaann · 02/12/2008 12:09

Pagwatch - Don't you find Gary Richardson so up himself? I don't always listen to the Sunday programme but on Today on R4 he is very unfunny when he thinks he's being hilarious. He also ummed and ahhed a lot during the Beijing TV coverage.

I find that Aasmah reacts in the same way to an inane email as she does to some really important news. She is also really awkward at the lighter parts of the show - chats to colleagues etc.

Did anyone else find the trailers for Breakfast and Drive where they got the presenters to say how much they loved each other in the style of a dating programme - REALLY REALLY irritating? How they got Peter, Anita and Shelagh to do it I don't know.

I really like Simon Mayo but find that he can be a bit sycophantic to American film star guests - he thanks them about three times for doing him the privilege of appearing on his show to plug their films. Apart from this quibble and the strange case of his relationship with Kermode he is perfect.

Yes, yes fionaann. Agree about Colin Paterson. Did you hear him interviewing Britney's mum when Simon Mayo was ill? Not so good. And because he sounds just like campy Colin from that Colin and Justin decorating pair, I always imagine that's what he looks like. Perhaps it is??!

fionaann · 02/12/2008 16:46

Yes Merrylegs - I did hear that cringeworthy interview. He also reports on items as though he is a cool, happening, hip young reporter often with disdain for those he is reporting about. He is in fact middle aged and balding but in denial.
