Adrian Mole on BBC Sounds

Has anyone else absolutely loved this? I loved the first two when I was a teen but had never bothered with the subsequent books. I listened to the wilderness years when it was on Sounds a couple of months ago and have just finished the weapons of mass destruction.

They are abridged, which I normally dislike, but I absolutely loved them and the narrator and the music matched to the era was perfect.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to listen now while I have a bath

Harry McEntire is a great Adrian Mole.

Terrific . So well done .

Thank you for alerting me to these.
The AM Diaries are my Mastermind specialist subject. I’ve been a little bit in love with him since I was 13.

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/10/2026 02:03

Oh, thank you for this!

TorroFerney · 04/10/2026 07:51

Yes I’m liking them. I remember As a. child being absolutely beside myself when I found out the book was going to be a tv series. And I bought the record of the theme music- was it Ian dury?

he has such a shit home life as a child which obviously I didn’t get when I read it originally (mine was equally shit though in different ways!).

Ooh, I had no idea it was on BBC Sounds! Off to download!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 04/10/2026 08:15

Oh thank you, I love Adrian Mole! I have a re-read of them all every year. I'm still sad about Sue Townsend.

Copperoliverbear · 04/10/2026 08:17

I loved it and will now listen to it. I also went to see it at the theatre. It was fantastic. Thanks for letting us know.

It's been wonderful. I didn't own many books as a child as they were expensive but I have such a clear memory of buying The Secret Diary... and reading it over and over. I remember being quite confused about what this 'thing' was that he kept measuring at first but I worked it out eventually😁

I now have all the books and do a re-read every so often, it's a great story of course but really interesting in it's social commentary and record of the recent past.

Well, I've just finished listening to the final episode.
Am in tears.
Just brilliant.

StupidCupid50 · 07/10/2026 22:55

I can only find Weapons of Mass Destruction on there, is they the only one?

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/10/2026 23:13

@StupidCupid50
Yes, but there's 10 episodes, did you find them all? I had to hunt around for them.

I wish the Beeb would rebroadcast the adaptations of the earlier books.

13 and 3/4 ? Lovely books.

Yes I think so. There was another one earlier this year but it’s not there now. It was the one where he writes a cook book.

Some writing doesn’t stand the test of time and some books go on for too many sequels. None of these apply to these books. They are wonderful!

I adore Adrian Mole it's so sad we won't get anymore books. The Prostrate Year's is my favourite beautifully written funny yet poignant.

Usernamesalltakenblues · 13/10/2026 12:46

I read the first two books when they first came out and absolutely loved them. The books got past around my friendship circls at the time because they were so popoular .I also really enjoyed the 1975 tv series - I'm not necessarily keen on tv adaptations of books I've read but this was done so well.

I've not been making a point of listening to the radio series but I've listened to it and thoroughly enjoyed the bits I've heard when it's been on when I switched the radio on. It's brilliant and it surprises me even though there are obviously huge gaps in my Adrian Mole knowledge but I can jump in and out of it and feel at home with the characters and feel I know what's going on. Harry McEntire is just perfect as Adrian.
