Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you would love to attend Pip's wedding with Natasha and the starry twins, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-12-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Starting the new thread a bit early as I'm not sure I'll have much internet access for the next few days. Fill up the old one first. And then - over to you!

(Credit for the thread title goes to @TripleSulko.)

Um, why did Alan not check his bank balance while Anna was there.
He could see the date and know it was for the flowers and explain that Carol had made the mistake and he never knew.
Why couldn't he then write a cheque to Anna for the £6000 with out having to go through the estate, I mean it was £6000 not £6,000,000.
Bit silly if you ask me.

AgentKim · 09/10/2026 06:00

Oh and who really cares about Anna anyway.

@JoelenesParrot "that terrible film It’s a Wonderful Life."

Glad to hear someone else doesn't love it - I like the premise of it, but not the main character.

I tried it once as everyone was going on about it. Dreadful.

sorrynotathome · 09/10/2026 07:00

Anna came across as ridiculously hysterical. It’s really hard to believe she is a barrister.

Yes that’s what struck me too. Rightly or wrongly, you’d think she would be more level headed when surprised by something.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/10/2026 07:55

Just for balance, I love It's a Wonderful Life. James Stewart is a great favourite of mine.

And especially as a close transaction would say '£60 to Bouquets4U' or similar.

Not necessarily as he could have bought the flowers on credit card

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/10/2026 10:55

I'd have bought them on credit card using Google Pay.

If Anna had burst into my home and berated my kind, compassionate husband, I would have booted her and her chum right out. With a flea in her ear.

And if I were Alistair, I'd be having a word with Paul about his attitude towards me.

It’s a very different matter when you’re personally involved …

BeatriceBatchelor · 09/10/2026 13:14

But shouldn't she have asked Alan for an explanation before accusing him?

Madcats · 09/10/2026 14:29

Anna flying off the handle about Carol’s bank transfer is in stark contrast to the lack of curiosity displayed by the “Archers” when Peggy left her wealth to a small charity whose
volunteers visited the Laurels. I’m impressed (or rather horrified) that a bank app would let her send money to a new payee from a savings account without a lot of extra interventions/pins/combinations of account numbers and amt to be sent.

Many predicted that Alan would get into trouble, but will it encourage him to retire? He and Usha could
move into Carol’s cottage if Anna isn’t going to get shoehorned into the cast longer term.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/10/2026 14:47

Or they could break the Ambridge mould and move into the cottage that Usha actually owns, rather than renting a different one in the village the way so many other house-owners in Ambridge seem to.

TottersBlankly · 09/10/2026 15:26

Brian could take up residence at the bus shelter! (Is there a shelter? Can’t recall.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/10/2026 16:11

No bus shelter that I know of, but why shouldn't he live in one of the cottages that belong to Home Farm? Alice is in one and Jakob another, but the third is vacant as far as we know (and hasn't been mentioned for decades, so it's about time they brought it back into use).

This post seems even more apt after tonight’s episode and especially in view of the fact that Anna was moaning to Helen. Peggy really did leave a fortune - and had once promised The Lodge to Helen, but in the end everyone just got a couple of hundred quid and that ridiculous holiday to Scotland. And no one batted an eyelid!! Surely Helen might have at least referenced this. Also, it seemed from Usha’s explanation that the £6,000 was in addition to repaying the money for the flowers and happened the day after. One thing was true, anna didn’t have much time for Carole and was happy to take advantage of Alan’s good nature and let him take on the lion’s share.

AintNoPartyLikeANumber10Party · 09/10/2026 23:17

I stand by my previous comment.
Anna needs to piss off to Bristol and Alan needs to find his backbone. Tiresome.

Come on SW give us some pre-wedding action and more Aldridge drama.

echt · 09/10/2026 23:53

The bit that got me was Anna saying Carol would have told her about sending the money. On what planet did Carol ever tell Anna anything she didn't want to?

Good acting by Anna, though. Fine mid-season form.

AgentKim · 10/10/2026 07:20

Oh I was just annoyed by it all. Fallon moaning about having to move out but dosnt want to. The Pirate saying how fabulous and brave Fallon was getting over the spilt, ( considering it was Fallons idea in the first place,).
That Irish bloke, it never fails to amaze me how they can have some random playing a part, but none of the regulars in for ages. Like Eddie Grundy saying Oliver can't come to the baby wetting its head with cidar party. When was the last time we heard from dear old Oliver?
Anna needs to get a grip she is taking her guilt ( that she didnt like her mum very much), out on Alan. Alan needs to stop wittering about and pull up his big boy pants and tell Anna he will sue her for deformation of character if she is not careful. Not that he will. Usha is not a lot of good either. Im getting really annoyed at TA story lines at the moment. Too much umming and arring, noone saying anything that would sort a bad situation out straight away. So much beating around the bush, its an effort to listening to some times.

TherapistInATabard · 10/10/2026 07:31

Ha! I thought the celebrant was northern Irish, then I thought he was ‘Borcestshire’, then I heard a welsh lilt, then back to NI. His accent was all over the shop.

Darker · 10/10/2026 07:43

I am finding the balance wrong at the moment. Too many angsty stories. And now we have Lovell James price rises shoved in on top.

That bit where Helen said something, and Paul just went "Alastair?" like he was chairing the discussion 😲 who does he think he is!

DeanElderberry · 10/10/2026 08:21

The celebrant sounded Northern Irish-ish. Armagh maybe? With a long sojourn in England.

JoelenesParrot · 10/10/2026 08:54

@AgentKim80-year-old Oliver was far too busy doing the housekeeping rotas and checking the laundry lists to take an evening off to go to the Grundy party. His workload and living arrangements just don’t sit right- and haven’t done for years. He should have moved on when C died or just gone silent. He could still partly own GG while languishing on a sun lounger in the Caribbean. The idea that a man of his means would be happy sharing a home with the Grundies is frankly absurd. He doesn’t even seem to own a flat in London that he could retreat to.

Paul seems to forget who pays his wages. It’s awkward for Alistair as in a normal world he would have called Paul out for the way he behaved in front of Helen but it’s all very delicate given A’s relationship with Denise. Paul has got very big for his boots but A can’t really do anything about it because of D- and Paul seems to know that.
