I’ve not started it yet, I kind of feel im saving it for a treat.

Might there be another series?

Thingamebobwotsit · 08/06/2026 15:05

No idea on the next series, but I love this. Slowly making my way through it with DH. Utter joy.

Sally2791 · 08/06/2026 15:18

Love it!

I caught it by accident one day while I was driving and have become a fan. I also hope there's another series.

PerspicaciaTick · 08/06/2026 20:27

One of the best things on R4 recently. I completely believe this relationship and am a little jealous of them. At least one episode made me sob my heart out - but I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 08/06/2026 20:29

I loved the ending of today's. They almost soothed me to sleep!

Tocsin · 08/06/2026 20:47

Was wonderful, wasn’t it?

Finding myself not having been married to Roger Allam for decades has been a grave mistake on my part …

It's funny how tastes are different.

I really didn't like this series. It's one of the ones that makes me reach for the off button straight away.

I'm not a fan of Joanna Lumley at all. I wasn't even before I knew she is a big friend of Boris Johnson but these days even hearing her voice reminds me of him and I just can't listen to her at all.

Tocsin · 09/06/2026 06:15

That doesn’t sound unreasonable, @AnonymityAnonymity.

I know nothing about Ms Lumley’s social life but I haven’t always loved the show. In the past I’ve often found it stilted and forced - and heard nothing but actors reading out a script. But it’s grown on me. I adore the format, I love the gradual world building - and as someone rather determinedly single, I find the portrayal of this particular loving relationship really persuasive. But I don’t expect every other listener to feel the same.

I actually try not to know much about actors and actresses personal lives
@Tocsin. I prefer to try to believe in the role they are playing rather than being swayed by thoughts of who they are in irl.

But in the case of Boris Johnson and Joanna Lumley it was impossible to avoid knowing about their social connection. And inevitably once known can't be unknown and forgotten.

The fact that you have grown to love this show for it's own sake rather than because of who is in it actually does you great credit. I realise I am being prejudicial when I am reluctant to give films/ radio shows/ TV shows a chance because for one reason or another I don't like the people appearing in it. Although I will say in my favour that I'm not someone who watches or listens to something just because I like a certain performer. I don't do uncritical adulation of anyone.

FizzingAda · 11/06/2026 19:43

Love it. Could listen to Roger Allam reading the railway timetable. Or the shipping forecast (preferably the midnight one, next to me. O stop it! 😂😂).
the Joanna character is rather selfish though. She doesn't deserve him.

Tocsin · 11/06/2026 20:26

She is selfish. But he likes being magnanimous. And (usually) finds her entertaining. He’d have walked all over a compliant wife.
