Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you also confide only in your budgie, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from [https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/5457344-the-archers-spoilers-thread-11-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here]], where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Not feeling greatly enthused about what's going on in Ambridge at the moment, tbh. I'm annoyed at Brian's hypocrisy about Ruairi given the furore over George's attempt to frame Alice as the cause of the accident. I do hope we don't have a slow drip drip drip now as one after another the members of the Aldridge/Archer clan find out what really happened and endlessly agonise over what to do. Frankly I don't care. There! I've said it.

Pip's OK. Well, good, but what was the point of that story, I wonder?

I suspect I'm in a minority of one in rather enjoying hearing (a) from Bert Horobin and (b) about Fletcher. I surmise Bert is here to stay for a while because the BBC has (amazingly) updated his character page: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/1wQP3mKR6yr9LVs05jddxcY/bert-horrobin (prominent actor photo warning). Given how out of date a lot of the other character pages are, this seems odd, but there we are.

That's all I can be bothered to say! Over to you.

If he is typical of the standard of confidentiality now usual in the NHS I feel that they ought to be ashamed of themselves. (But then, Susan Carter was employed for a while as Tim Hathaway's receptionist and her idea of confidentiality was not what I'd call worth having.) Similarly, as a friend Ben is totally unreliable and should never be trusted with anything that matters.

Ruairi had a conversation with Ben which he thought was private, and Ben went off and told someone about it because he leapt to a (wrong) conclusion about it. Badly done, Ben.

RuairiDonovan · 09/05/2026 15:31

@EBearhug ,It's hiraeth that Tom had tattooed on his arm, isn't it?
IIRC both he and Natasha had it tattooed. It was an illogical choice. Like someone thought it was the only Welsh word without a translation (when it actually does have a translation). Imagine the scene - 'Let's have the same tattoo'. 'Ooh yes, how about 'Homesickness'?' Hmm

Also, I think Chris and Alice had tattoos of each other's name instead of wedding rings.

Ben AFAIK hasn't been involved with Ruairi in a clinical capacity so I don't think there was a breach of confidentiality. In his position, I would have spoken to Brian too.

Gonners · 09/05/2026 15:47

Ben is very nearly as tedious as his sister these days.

RuairiDonovan · 09/05/2026 15:59

He's more tedious but a better actor. I can't see where they are going with Ben.

JoelenesParrot · 09/05/2026 16:45

I would work quite hard to avoid Ben, Azra and Akram if I saw any of them on the other side of the village green. They are all so worthy. How much longer is this mental health hobby horse going to go on for. It is beyond tedious. I actually would rather hear from the tiresome Bert than B, A or A.

And I don’t think Brian would have given getting rid of Ben in the Te’rum a second thought- he certainly wouldn’t have felt the need to seek him out to apologise to him- even if only to allay suspicions. He would feel the same as we do about stupid stickybeak Ben. I wish he would go back to the cereal cupboard.

Ben AFAIK hasn't been involved with Ruairi in a clinical capacity so I don't think there was a breach of confidentiality.

Ben was however trampling over Ruairi's privacy in hobnailed size elevens. If Ruairi finds out how unreliable Ben is about not passing on everything he has assumed from what he hasn't actually been told, I don't suppose he'll ever say anything to him ever again.

"I think he may be having a mental health episode. I know, because I had one of those, and obviously they are all identical" is a really terrible place to start from anyway.

Actually, Ben knew perfectly well it was a breach of confidentiality, because otherwise he wouldn't have felt the need to start with "A bit awkward actually – I don't want to betray his confidence." And saying it to Brian in front of Lilian doubles the offence. It becomes gossip at that point.

Pity Brian and Lilian didn't both immediately say, "if you don't want to do it then don't. Go away."

My mother behaved a bit like Ben when she was studying the Alexander Technique. An over active enthusiasm to give advice and demonstrate what they have just learnt a lot of the time.

Brefugee · 09/05/2026 18:43

We did a whole big thing about "hiraeth" on one of my early OU modules.

As i understood it, it is a whole Big Feeling And Meaning and is untranslatable in the way "heimat" (German) or "hygge" (Danish) would be. As it happens i do understand "heimat" (being German) so i don't have as much trouble with it as people who speak languages that don't have something similar.

RuairiDonovan · 09/05/2026 20:08

NOT THE ARCHERS - Scroll by if it's of no interest

it is a whole Big Feeling And Meaning and is untranslatable It 's not really, but a Danish friend says hygge isn't.
It just has a different meaning depending on the context.
It usually means you miss something, like I am homesick means I miss home.

There's a word I can't translate but maybe someone can help.
It's when you are being shocked about something and it's in the present tense.
For example, Tom is shocked/outraged/stunned/surprised by Natasha only getting £50 for his coat.
All the words I can think of are past tense.

It's definitely 'Tom is [verb] at the price.' or even 'Tom was [verb] at the price'
I'd be doing it if I were shocked at a price/behaviour/whatever.. but being shocked doesn't convey it.
The closest I can think of is 'Tom is/was gasping at the price' but the word doesn't quite convey it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/05/2026 20:16

It's interesting but I don't think I can help. Unless "is aghast" would fit?

Gonners · 09/05/2026 21:15

"Gobsmacked" springs to mind. 😁

I think the fact there are no comments on tonight’s episode says it all. A total non-event - the conclusion of all the nonsense we’ve been forced to listen to: George at death’s door in hospital, the long and protracted whodunnit, the blackmail plot all tied up in a single episode with George an apparently reformed character. What a waste of time! Utterly pointless. And now it sounds like Bert might actually end up being fixed up with Carol - I thought it utterly ridiculous when someone suggested it up thread, but it looks as if this is what might happen.

I'm quite sure that wasn't the end of the Ruairi attack on George SL. At some point George will decide he needs more money and go back to blackmail Brian some more, Ruairi will hear about it and either go to the police or hit George harder. I'm hoping for the latter option.

I'm not fond of Gnasher but roared when she said "Stop saying waxed jacket" at Tom. He deserved to lose it for not helping out at the sale and wanting special treatment at Terum.

I had a moment of confusion when all the SUV'd-up millionaires were out buying, then the waxed jacket went.

I love Natasha in all her awfulness (same as Kate), and I absolutely roared as well, not least because I was just thinking 'stop saying waxed jacket' just as she said it Grin

muddyford · 10/05/2026 05:21

'Flabbergasted'?

LillianGish · 10/05/2026 06:43

Reeling?

RuairiDonovan · 10/05/2026 10:58

NOT THE ARCHERS

None of those are right but thanks for the suggestions.
Imagine you have a friend and she is shocked by everything. You go shopping and she's constantly saying things like '£2 for a bottle of water!', '£5 for parking! That's outrageous.'...
She comes out with comments like 'I'm surprised at Becky letting her daughter go out in those clothes' or 'I saw Jess the other day, I was shocked at how she's aged' or 'Linda's got a new car. Again.'
You don't enjoy her company because she' always -ing at everything.
The nearest I can think of is 'she balks at everything' but it's not quite it.
It would do.

Another one is when you are sick or bored of something. I can't think of the mot juste for 'I've - of it'
Example: I have become sick and tired of so many new characters in The Archers'. I'd probably use 'I have become weary of ...' but it doesn't quite have the punch of 'I've had a gutful of...' or 'I'm sick to the back teeth of...' .

On a positive note, David Morrissey on Desert Island Discs. I like him.

Gonners · 10/05/2026 11:09

I quite like "I've had it up to here with ....", which covers everything from the government, via children cycling on the pavement in a shopping street, all the way down to the local Coop running out of basic items like bread and milk.

TottersBlankly · 10/05/2026 11:32

I see they cut Leonard’s specific mention of ‘bat guano’ from the omnibus.😄

And that they’ve restored Anna to a properly functioning set of chambers, (correcting the nonsense written by a SW a few weeks ago).

TottersBlankly · 10/05/2026 11:41

Anna’s (half) brother Richard ‘died’?

🤨

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 10/05/2026 12:18

"She rails at/against everything."

Would that work?

RuairiDonovan · 10/05/2026 12:43

@WheresThatCatGoneNow, Not quite - too negative. I don't actually need a word, it's just that I don't think there is an English word for it, whereas there are words for the different meanings of hiraeth.

@Gonners ,the Ambridge Death Fairy at work?

Would the Scottish word "scunnered" fit the bill here?

E.g. "I'm scunnered with hearing J** turn out to be the expert at everything she turns her hand to."

MorningCoffeePlease · 10/05/2026 16:34

For the other word, my suggestion would be "bridles at".

RuairiDonovan · 10/05/2026 18:51

@MorningCoffeePlease , yes to scunnered, no to bridles at.
I really don't think there's an English word for it, in the same way as there isn't an English word for naïve (there is but it's a borrowed one).

The literal translation for the scunnered one is 'to surfeit' but I don't think anyone would say 'I have surfeited with The Archers right now'. I might be wrong. Smile

ExitPursuedByABare · 10/05/2026 19:01

Loved David Morrissey. He got so emotional he made me cry. Although I am still in the jeffing hospital and am constantly on the edge.
