Recommendations for gentle radio comedies like Cabin Pressure and Bleak Expectations?

If I like "Cabin Pressure", "Bleak Expectations" and anything by John Finnemore, what else might I like?

I've got two Audible credits to spend and would really like some recommendations, ideally that are not books.

Looking for gentle humour that's not mentally taxing!

In and out of the Kitchen, Elvenquest is silly but fun.

Madcats · 29/03/2026 14:23

Have you tried Hut 33 (not John Finnemore, but still good)? You can get the first 3 series in one Audible purchase.

Szerelem · 29/03/2026 18:56

@RomanMum I have downloaded In and Out of the kitchen and am enjoying Miles Jupp (though can't get his Balamory song or of my head!).

Thanks @Madcats , I'll have a look at that. If you like John Finnemore you clearly know good comedy!

I love Laura Solon - you can't get hold of her on the BBC currently, but good people have archived her series Talking and Not Talking on YouTube:

Clare in the Community
Lucy Montgomery
The Simon Day Show

RomanMum · 29/03/2026 23:16

@Arlanymor me too - my internal monologue is often in “China lion” or Chigley Hall voice…

Two other suggestions: The Christopher Marlowe Mysteries, and Angstrom. Both brilliant and criminally underrated IMO.

The one with the couple getting together, This Train Departs From… or variations of that? Written by Katherine Jakeways I think, with Rosie Cavaliero.

I've just been listening to Ladies Of Letters as it's been running on 4 extra recently. Also Alan Partidge from the Oast House has got me through some long car journeys and I enjoyed Revolting People and Old Harry's Game.

Everlore · 30/03/2026 15:13

Reluctant Persuaders is an absolute must listen, I think it is right up there with Cabin Pressure and Bleak Expectations in terms of superb writing and flawless casting, I can't recommend it highly enough!
I am also a huge fan of Start/Stop, though all the characters are, deliberately, mostly pretty unpleasant and unlikable so if you're not into cringe comedy it may not be for you, but I personally find it hilarious and, again, the writing and cast are, to quote Arthur, brilliant!
My most controversial favourite, which I know lots of people can't stand, is Count Arthur Strong. Of course it's incredibly silly but I still find it charming in its own way!

Tom Wrigglesworths hang ups - the episode where his dad puts the internet icon in the bin and then tries to print out the internet because he deleted it is very amusing. Clare in the community is also a good listen. Sarah Kendall trilogy is amazing. All radio 4 but audiology fills the gap.

BareBelliedSneetch · 31/03/2026 16:41

I loved elvenquest and old Harry’s game.

reincarnathan was funny too.

agree about the one where they met on a train and conversations from a long marriage.

Madcats · 31/03/2026 18:07

DH studiously going through his downloads whilst we are cooking adds:
Plum House (Simon Callow,Miles Jupp & Jane Horrocks)
World of Pub (approach with care..he is sounding a bit vague)

Comtesse · 31/03/2026 18:55

I quite like old school Garrison Keillor but that is not high energy!
