It's that special time of the year again on Radio 3 - Christmas around Europe

The annual Christmas around Europe day: a nine-hour celebration in a feast of concerts which take us across European destinations including Denmark, Finland, Austria, Spain, Germany, Latvia and the UK.

Every year classical music radio stations from across Europe come together to celebrate Christmas with a series of concerts from around the continent. Featuring special performances of Christmas music, the celebration covers a wide variety of music. This nine-hour celebration promises to be a journey of discovery to delight the ears and inspire the soul.

It's one of the best theme-days that Radio 3 does and for me every year it's the real start of the Christmas season.

Helsinki is proving very enjoyable at the moment, although the Hanover Girls' Choir were very good earlier.

It's gorgeous although very sad-sounding in parts.

As a taster, the music from Helsinki was by Ensemble Gamut! with this being one of the songs:

The hour from Berlin is being particularly lovely.

The RIAS Chamber Choir sing Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, plus other music by Britten and Poulenc.

It was lovely - I have just listened to it again.😃

We're still listening having turned on the radio at about 4 - just heard compline from Cambridge. I didn't expect to enjoy the Finnish slot as much as I did 😊
