Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that like George you like your steak very well done, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Mulligan mostly makes me think of John Finnemore's Souvenir Show. This is good, and tenuously connected to a recent TA storyline

Over to you!

seems absolutely OBVIOUS to me that Ed'n'Emma give George work in their business

He could always go to Timpsons

Exactly.

In real life you wouldn't have the criminal who'd caused harm to members of your family demanding you give him a job. Might give rise to good drama but incredibly unrealistic.

If Ed&Emma are that happy to have him back in Ambridge they can employ him.

There's bound to be a Timpsons in Felpersham or the surrounding area, they're in every large supermarket.

See thread title! I thought it was fortuitous, given that another older meaning is apparently a stew made from odds and ends, which feels very much like recent storylines.

I should indeed have seen that. I blame work for being unreasonably busy.
Apologies.

If he was really repentant he might consider looking for work practically anywhere other than the place where the woman he nearly drowned worked

Both the women he nearly drowned, isn't it? Joy seems to be working there as well, or at least she was consulted by Jolene about whether it was OK to employ him.

Bruisername · 20/10/2025 19:24

That was a failed public service

Adams voice is so annoying.

echt · 20/10/2025 22:30

Well, Brian's King Lear-ing is coming home to roost.

One thing for sure, Adam will not come out of this well, and not because of the money issue whenever, but because he is not blood. That's Brian's beef and always has been.

BramleyMoore · 20/10/2025 22:54

George will stay manipulative and selfish causing Amber to run off with Brad. That will make him see the error of his ways and he'll finally get his redemption arc.

WitcheryDivine · 20/10/2025 23:01

Really enjoyed all the Brianlets comparing notes!! I’m pretty sure his game plan was a) ask favourite and nearest child Alice b) she said no ask next nearest child Adam c) ooh Son of the Blood Royal is interested! Disregard a) as she’s only a girl and currently busy and get b) in as an unpaid tutor to the Precious Prince until he reaches his majority ie learns to drive a tractor.

BeatriceBatchelor · 21/10/2025 05:12

I thought it awfully decent of Adam and Ruiari to not point out that Alice shouldnt run the farm because she's an alcoholic.

MinnieBaldock · 21/10/2025 05:40

So Oliver is going to be 80, and I hope he has many more years to come.
If something happens to Oliver will his daughter turf the Grundys out on thier ear,( I know I would). Oliver has been too much of a soft touch but if this does happen what will Eddie and Carrie do. There is literally nowhere for them to live.
All their kids are all living to bursting point in thier respective homes. I bet that it has never occurred to Eddie at all, but I bet deep down Carrie has worried about it.

Bruisername · 21/10/2025 06:14

They had that panic a couple of years back but it’s all fine because they’ll just be given an almshouse to live in 🙄

GreenLaurel · 20/10/2025 07:50

I don’t feel like George has really taken any accountability for his actions yet, if indeed he ever will. He doesn’t seem very sorry at all. I do hope we get an episode where someone (Kate or Brian or Lilian) rips him a new one.

Your wish, granted! Gosh that was nice.

I could do with a few more people doing the same though.

Hmm George in the tree business. He could sit on a branch in the world's tallest tree, saw it off and plummet to his death. His parting words in the fall would be blaming somebody else. Emmur would spend her life trying to get Justice for Poor George.

Yes.

Jolene is really pissing me off. Yeah yeah, he grassed markie up to try to make amends. Putting in a few words does not make up for nearly killing several people - one of whom was HER DAUGHTER in an entirely avoidable incident and being happy to let the drunk take the rap. It's fucking irritating that Jolene has gone all motherly fawning at him.

change of subject (although since Adam was mentioned)

If Caroline died 8 years ago, I think it is quite likely that Oliver’s passport is out of date, he has forgotten about travel insurance and hasn’t done his ESTA.

Aside from working for that engineering co, I don’t recall Alice lending a hand on the farm? Maybe she ploughed and harvested the fields in a series of Ambridge Extra that I missed (though I just remember the ones with her getting drunk at Southampton)!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/10/2025 18:11

I seem to remember that Oliver has visited his daughter in America since Caroline died; also he was selling their property in Tuscany so would have needed his passport then as well.

The death of a partner does not automatically render the survivor brain-dead, so there's no reason to expect him to have forgotten about travel insurance and ESTA just because Caroline is not there to chivvy him about them. I'm not sure she ever actually went with him on a visit to his daughter in NY, so he must have managed without her for that trip before.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g belated bravo for the thread title!!

muddyford · 21/10/2025 19:40

Do I detect the first cracks appearing in the romantic idyll of Amber and George?

ChersHeart · 21/10/2025 19:41

You do.

Greeniscalming · 21/10/2025 20:05

Do we know why Oliver’s other two children aren’t in contact with him (or why he’s not in contact with them)?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/10/2025 20:14

We were told that they sided with his ex-wife in their divorce, blamed Oliver entirely, and have refused to see him as a result.

Greeniscalming · 21/10/2025 20:18

Thank you

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/10/2025 20:22

The interesting thing is that Oliver didn't seem to have another woman in tow when we met him, so presumably the divorce was not because of his infidelity; what on earth had he done to deserve such a total reaction against him? He's never shown any sign of being a Robalike or anything of the sort.

muddyford · 21/10/2025 19:40

Do I detect the first cracks appearing in the romantic idyll of Amber and George?

Definitely. She's way more of a realist about day-to-day living despite her daft job, as well as aware of the privilege of living rent-free.

Good also to have any new listeners brought up to date with Brian's less than wonderful past.
