Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be delighted to have your wedding reception across the lawn from the local Flower & Produce Show, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Charlotte Smith must have been delighted to get back to Countryfile and Farming Today. What a pile of piffle tonight. Ah well.

When is George expected back? It can't be long now, surely. It occurs to me that I can't recall whether he's ever spoken on air to Ruairi. As their actors are currently the best (IMO) amongst the younger members of the cast, I hope they will cross swords in some way.

And finally, I can't mention Carry on Cleo without squeezing in one of the best lines ever written (Denis Norden and Frank Muir have the credit): Infamy, infamy! They've all got it in for me! Currently, Lily probably feels this way.

Over to you!

There isn't much they can do with Alistair, unless Fat Dan comes back.
I like him as a character but Jakob is also a vet.

Shame because I like him.

Gonners · 05/10/2025 20:31

Ha! I don't visualise Denise as remotely portable, and I imagine Shula as similarly on the hefty side. I have absolutely no idea why, though.

TheCrasher · 05/10/2025 20:33

I don't picture either of them as hefty. About average perhaps.

Bruisername · 05/10/2025 20:36

I imagine Denise as quite petite

Gonners · 05/10/2025 21:21

Ha! I wonder why I picture them both as large. Maybe it's because I find them both bossy, and being bossy is dangerous unless you have some weight to throw behind it! 😆

TottersBlandly · 05/10/2025 22:03

YKWIM … 😁

I assume Helen is rarely in these days, being too busy gallivanting with Dane. I do hope she has picked up his roving accent. Meanwhile Henry is busy goat-wrangling and Jack - now aged what, 9? - is left on guard, protecting their possessions from the rampaging twins. The twins naturally speak only Welsh at home, which complicates matters as nobody but Natasha can understand them and she isn't listening.

Tom has disappeared under a pile of broken toys, ornaments and clicky-heeled shoes. Nobody has noticed.

Omg dying 😆

BeatriceBatchelor · 06/10/2025 03:25

Oh dear. Paul is camping it up again.

muddyford · 06/10/2025 05:42

I visualise Shula as normal, but Denise as taller but...ahem...solid.

Eastie77Returns · 06/10/2025 08:06

IIRC Denise was quite partial to biscuits and sweet treats (seem to remember the aftermath of a dinner date with Alistair where they talked about her love of custard and cakes) so I picture her as quite solidly built. But she’s also into dance fitness and apparently an excellent swimmer so perhaps not overweight as such.

WitcheryDivine · 06/10/2025 08:52

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0jqy8pn275o tangential maybe but “Old Kate” good article today about being an SEN parent. Real Kate obviously wouldn’t even notice if any of her children had SEN.

Brefugee · 06/10/2025 10:08

I picuture Denise as her character in The Oulawas now, so that's weird in my head. Susan is more like Mavis from Coronation Street. I don't have a head picture for Clarrie but i can guess it would veer to a less extreme version of Hilda Ogden from Corrie.

That pub scene was awkward, so well done to writers & actors.

WitcheryDivine · 06/10/2025 10:09

I think Shula is small and slim, she refuses biscuits but presses them on visitors. Denise because of the exercise classes I think is probably a size 12 and strong, getting into lifting to strengthen her bones post menopause.

RegimentalSturgeon · 06/10/2025 10:27

We know that Shula is large of arse, because that has been remarked on n the programme.

Gonners · 06/10/2025 10:41

Yes, I imagine her shortish, with an ample horsewoman's bottom. And I assume that Denise is much the same ... because Alistair seems like the sort of small-c-conservative man who would go for a "type".

TheCrasher · 06/10/2025 10:43

"from my husband and I to" Tut,tut.

@RegimentalSturgeon , whopping big backside

Yes, Clare Perkins has a very distinctive voice, so that's who I see too.

I can't remember what was said about Shula's posterior. Was it Shula herself agonising in the manner of Arabella Weir in The Fast Show, or others making catty comments?

OP posts:
TheCrasher · 06/10/2025 11:49

Susan was asking Shula about riding lessons IIRC, and mentioned that it riding gave a woman a whopping big backside.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 23/03/2021 14:20

Best laugh I've had for ages!
Susan's unguarded comment about Shula's 'whopping great backside' 🤣😁 🤣

I heard that too! May have to have a lie-down in a darkened room to get over it!

Brefugee · 06/10/2025 16:49

@Sidebeforeself survives another day... perhaps we should open a book on it?

I’m sorry Sides not here at the moment and hasn’t left a forwarding address.

Brefugee · 06/10/2025 17:07

my particular skill set, remember 😜

Beeinalily · 06/10/2025 17:08

Just listened to the Omnibus and I think my heart might actually be broken 💔

polyhymnia · 06/10/2025 18:21

On Denise’s figure, I seem to remember that, for a vet nurses’ awards dinner, she tried on a dress borrowed from someone (Chelsea??) we are supposed to assume is young and lissom, to great admiration all round - not to mention lustful thoughts from Alasdair. So I guess she’s pretty slender.
