Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Thought Clarrie had more backbone.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 07/09/2025 19:04

Oh bloody hell. It's more cricket.
And Snell.
And Amber.
And more Lawrence.

Just needs Fagash to pop up to make it perfect.

TheCrasher · 07/09/2025 19:08

The podcast was good today.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 07/09/2025 19:21

Why was Lynda lying?

Why does Brad have anything to do with the ghastly Amber?

Why wasn't Lawrence given an invitation to the world by two or three of the hefty lads in the cricket team?

Why did Adam feel any need to "get to the bottom" of what had happened about two players being paid for one game before the payment was stopped (and they both stopped playing for Ambridge)?

I implore you, in the matter of Lilian, do not give Nick Warburton any more ideas about characters to re-write as nastier than they already were.

Gonners · 07/09/2025 20:17

I thought Brad showed dangerous signs of almost being a little bit assertive with Amber this evening. I was a bit disappointed, though, that he didn't positively encourage her to get her teeth done in Turkey. She really is intensely boring, isn't she?

I never want to hear Lynda or Lawrence again. Or Tom, Adam, Kenton, Jolene, Pip ... and so many more. It might be quicker to list the people I do want to hear!

TheGander · 07/09/2025 22:08

The whole Lawrence thing is turning the Archers into an early Christmas panto. Oh yes it is. I did enjoy Kate’s Boadicea- like fury against Amber though. Even though as previously stated, it’s most unlikely she wouldn’t have heard of her liaison with George already. I feel so many strands are being woven into the Archers at the moment that credibility is being sacrificed.

JoelenesParrot · 08/09/2025 07:56

Oh God- Brad and Amber are going to end up entangled somehow…he seems to be the only person able to have a conversation with her without her squealing.

Please no! When does he go back to University.

JudyCoolibar · 08/09/2025 08:24

Has Ruairi graduated from university?

Last year, wasn't it?

Bruisername · 08/09/2025 08:36

He’s got a job in ‘finance’ hasn’t he?

Gonners · 08/09/2025 08:49

I don't know about Felpersham, but in Kent term starts in 2 weeks. I suspect Brad may well start to wish he'd gone further afield!

TottersBlankly · 08/09/2025 09:09

Was going to say, Brad and Amber seem to be spending a lot of time together …

Countryspaniel · 08/09/2025 12:31

Gosh. Is anyone else fed up of Zainab's whiney voice.

TheCrasher · 08/09/2025 12:37

I don't find anything wrong with Zainab's voice.
Amber's voice is irritating.

Laurence will be around for some time, or he'll go away and then come back.

Gonners · 08/09/2025 12:58

Linda has the most irritating voice and if I were Robert I'd throttle her. Lilian comes a close second. And then Kirsty. Zainab isn't even in the top ten.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 08/09/2025 13:25

Irritating voices top 10

  1. Amber
  2. Lilian
  3. Lynda
  4. Jazzer
  5. Pip
  6. Lily
  7. Chelsea
  8. Jolene
9 and 10 Adam & Ian

Vocies 2-5 could all be equal second.

Voices I like - New Martyn, Fallon, Leonard, Joy, Kenton, David, Freddie, Henry, Tracy [when not in hyper mode]

Zainab's personality is whiny and irritating- her voice is fairly neutral.

TheCrasher · 08/09/2025 14:03

I like Kirsty's voice. Lynda's took a bit of getting used to.
Lilian's cackling is annoying, as are the 'darlings'. Jerlene can piss off with her moi daaarhhhlin'.
Pip's just annoying full stop.

The Lawrence actor is good, and although the character is abhorrent, I like his voice.

Lalgarh · 08/09/2025 14:16

A pre emptive eye roll 🙄at the prospect of Amber inevitably getting her teeth filed down for Turkey Teeth 🦷 and It All Backfiring

muddyford · 08/09/2025 14:36

I think it's a pity that an older man has been cast as a misogynistic racist. Someone a few decades younger, say David's age, could have been much more vicious and sly about it. Lawrence strikes me as lazy writing (again), especially with the golf club twaddle - various golf-playing friends say that clubs, these days, encourage new players, whatever their social background.

Bruisername · 08/09/2025 14:42

Although the words and delivery that come out of Amber's mouth are the most irritating of all, the actual tone of her voice isn't the worst. She does have a very similar whining edge to her voice to Zainab, in fact I often get them mixed up till I hear the context.

My top most disliked voice is Joy's, it sets my teeth on edge. Followed closely by Chelsea's. Freddie's voice has a grating high pitched irritating edge.

If he wasn't so dreary in delivery I'd like Adam's voice. David has a nice voice as does Kenton, so do Kirsty and Stella. I actually don't mind Lilian's voice, she sounds exactly like a horsey country set woman of her age.

On a side note I had no idea, till I read a book review in the weekend papers, that the David actor Tim Bentinck is also the 12th Earl of Portland.

TheCrasher · 08/09/2025 14:49

How old is Lawrence?
The David actor is 72, but the character is 66.

This time she burst into tears and ran away, which seems just as bad to me.
