Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

I generally don't dislike Stella (apart from her conversion of Pip into the World's Most Unconvincing Lesbian, which to be fair I mainly blame on Pip for being Pip). But what was she was thinking, "advising" Dreary Dave? Even Ruth seemed to be on his side!

It was consistent for Stella's character. She can be very patronising when talking about farming.

I can't remember the details but didn't she once talk down to Jill in a very condescending way to ?

JudyCoolibar · 04/09/2025 09:10

Is Lily still working at Grey Gables? What happened about that job Oliver wanted her to apply for and she didn't because she had her mind set on greater enterprises?

JudyCoolibar · 04/09/2025 09:14

I suspect Lillian has something up her sleeve to deal with Lawrence. I assume the club and the local association must need to keep attracting new members, so maybe pointing out that dinosaurs like him are putting off promising new players will sway the Borsetshire Golf Association or whatever it's called? Or maybe she will push Justin into complaining, with a quid pro quo that if he goes along with her she won't object to his new land acquisitions?

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 09:15

Ms Lily Pargetter, of Lower Loxley, is ‘saving up’ for a trip to (IIRC) Australia …

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 09:19

And it’s hilarious (not) that the SWs still have Mrs Ralph Bellamy ruining her nails working as a drudge at The Bull.

I genuinely think they just don’t understand who she is …

Gonners · 04/09/2025 09:54

I wonder if Lily has passed (or will pass} her degree course at Felper-sham? She seems to have been off on some "work experience" frolic at GG forever.

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 10:01

She got a First. Oliver was mighty impressed.

Gonners · 04/09/2025 10:08

Gosh, how on earth did I miss that? 😂

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 10:16

It was throw away. Introducing the fact that he and Dane wanted her to apply for the vacant position at GG. Which in itself was introducing her plan to see the world.

Yet another missed opportunity. I would have liked to hear Elizabeth learning the news - given how desperately neglected Lily felt at the time she received her A’ Level results. What with her bro being carted off to clink.

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 07:59

No … I think it’s possible she may want Stella as part of her farm …

I agree, but I think based on Stella's lack of enthusiasm for fat Rosie dominating both their lives it seems more likely she will look for a job elsewhere. Pip will of course want to follow her, briefly putting the future of Brookfield in doubt in the style of the Great North Move, but ultimately Stella will break her heart and it will be interesting to see how TWFL reacts when she finds herself the only lesbian in the village. It's good to see the SWs tackling the issue of inheritance - it was always a foregone conclusion who would takeover from Dan and then who would takeover from Phil. Ben is now firmly following his own career path - albeit finding it tricky to find a permanent role, but I still couldn't really tell you what Josh does. Helen and Tom are carving out clearly defined roles at Bridge Farm and it's still all to play for at Home Farm. There's so much for the SWs to work with without inventing ridiculous backstories for Joy, the golf club bigot and the improbably named Marky. And let's move forward with Freddie's inheritance - that's an entire spin off series on its own!

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 12:38

Indeed!

I think Josh is still quietly buying, renovating and re-selling farm machinery? Plus the egg business?

What I found so compelling last night was David and Ruth’s Gollum-like grasping to the chest of their precioussssss small family farm. They don’t even like their children expressing opinions on it (though they’re quick to ask for their labour, whenever)!

This is what tells me the wresting of Brookfield from their grasp could be truly epic. If the right SWs get to write it.

And I loved Stella flexing her farming muscle. 😁 She was so fluent and sure. It was wonderful to hear.

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 12:41

This is what I mean about TA being about battling for proximity to Archers …

CarlaH · 04/09/2025 12:53

TWFL?

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 12:55

The World’s First Lesbian.

Thanks.

<Nervously wonders if context is required>

TheCrasher · 04/09/2025 18:01

Riot Girls looks promising @TottersBlankly .

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 04/09/2025 19:40

I'm sooo bored with the Lawrence storyline.

I'm sympathetic to David not being that keen on "I know everything about farming" Stella being around all the time.

TottersBlankly · 04/09/2025 19:59

But he’s being as sly as Brian! It’s a theme.

TheCrasher · 04/09/2025 20:02

Good acting from Tim/David tonight.

Gonners · 04/09/2025 20:07

I quite often enjoy Tim Bentinck - the performance rather than the character. Stella seems to have fallen for it, so we can only hope that David's master plan succeeds (would this be a first?) and that Pip is inspired to apply for the same job, gets it (based on her amazing social skills), and bogs off to wherever it's based, taking Fat Rosie with her and never to grace our airwaves again.

<edited to remove a superfluous comma - obsessive? moi?>

TheCrasher · 04/09/2025 20:18

Some of the interactions between 2 characters like Lynda and Lilian work really well.
I think the Stella actor is good, especially with Brian or David.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 05/09/2025 08:29

Every Snell story is Lynda selflessy putting the heart and centre of Ambridge first, having faux self doubts at her ability to deliver whatever she took on and then being cheered on by a chorus of Ambridgers that, Lynda you're wonderful.

This year we've had Snell being wonderful at the pantomime, the village fete, the cricket (a failure but Snell was still wonderful) and now the nemesis of Lawrence

There's been far too much Snell recently.

Faaaar too much of the Snell. You are forgetting how she also threw open her home to the Maliks and embraced Islam by showboating her fasting skills. I think she adds nothing to the show except a consistent reason to irritate/even sometimes lose listeners. I have turned off many times when she features too heavily in the SL.

My feelings exactly!
