Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

@SpanThatWorld ,thinking about it, I think it was somewhere else that people said Chips and Fish.

Bruisername · 27/08/2025 21:21

I read somewhere that English language learners struggle with the order Brits say a descriptive list as there are unwritten rules about the order

so in the case of food the main protein always comes first

and in a descriptor of a bill it is a big, beautiful bill and not a beautiful, big bill

so chips and fish is totally wrong!!!

There is definitely a rule - it is amazing that we just know it as native speakers!

I wish I knew what was going through Willy Russell's head when he repeatedly had Shirley saying "chips and egg". As PP says there is an implicit expectation of word order in English which he must have violated for a reason. I'm assuming that it wasn't purely to send my granny into an incandescent rage.

EBearhug · 27/08/2025 23:14

It's eggunchips and fishunchips. Everyone knows.

Oh God- please don’t let this glorious thread turn into a discussion board on sex/gender issues…

I'd rather discussion wasn't policed. I find quite a lot of things discussed on this thread tedious but just scroll on by.

I'm sorry but sometimes this thread is taken over by non Archer stuff, like the time the discussion was about how to pronounce and spell Indian names. This took over nearly an entire thread.
If people want to talk about gender then there are lots of other threads about it.
I like the recipes that sometime come out of these threads but they don't go on for ever.
I don't think it's policing if someone politely ask not to let this thread be taken.over with stuff that can be discussed elsewhere.

Gonners · 28/08/2025 06:44

Oh FFS! But well done - I think you just made @BeatriceBatchelor's point even clearer.

WitcheryDivine · 28/08/2025 06:55

I thought it seemed entirely in keeping with rich many-childrened men I know for Brian to give one of them tonnes of hassle to help him while preparing to give everything to another. Usually of course it’s one of the girls who gets the job of being general helper and dogsbody while one of the princelings eventually inherits the house or business or both.

WitcheryDivine · 28/08/2025 06:56

One funny side effect of Adam’s constantly tired and sighing persona is that in my head he and Brian are quite close in age, say 80 and 65. That can’t be right for the story though.

Gonners · 28/08/2025 07:02

You're not that far off, though. Adam was born in June 1967, which makes him 58. Brian (Nov 1943) is a mere 81 for the next couple of months.

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/08/2025 08:43

I don't think it's policing if someone politely ask not to let this thread be taken.over with stuff that can be discussed elsewhere

But that applies to every non Archers discussion that crops up on these threads. Recipes, name pronunciation, department stores, who read law at Oxbridge ...

Let Women Speak 😊

Bruisername · 28/08/2025 08:51

agree - there’s some long conversations that are of only mild interest to me and some that I find very entertaining. I’m happy to read through both as it feels more like a place to come and chat about the archers and other musings with friends

TherapistInATabard · 28/08/2025 09:00

Adam clearly thinks Bridge Farm are lucky to have him and should be grateful for any minute he’s there!

when i did my CELTA certificate (teaching English as a foreign language) the instructor said he used to love it when this came up, because the people in the classes (to be teachers) were usually a mix of native and foreign speakers. And all the foreigners had painstakingly learned this type of thing - and the natives were always baffled when this came up and asked to give an order. Because we just do it.

Really really looking forward to Stella/Lizzy turning down Brian/Mr D'Arcy and the explosion that will come when Adam loses his job for helping Brian out too much and he gives the manager job to Alice "as agreed". Very very very much looking forward to that.

Brefugee · 28/08/2025 10:11

as for thread policing: meh. We are all having a conversation. The main topic is and always returns to The Archers.

It would be daft to say "no you can't talk about the harvest that's going on around your village" when the talk turns to harvest, or it doesn'T and we are aghast that it isn't while those of us who live around farms are constantly seeing the combines roaring around.

Or talking about the possible effects to Martha and FAS, or the possible ways Henry might now be letting out the trauma he endured at Rob's hands, or the dangers of Turkey Teeth etc etc

Just scroll past. (tbh i often do that with Archers content when the storyline is batshit)

SaffyRosie · 28/08/2025 11:18

I reckon that George is going to get shived. One of Marky's friends in the prison will overhear him.

I really do hope so.

TottersBlankly · 28/08/2025 11:30

It’s uncomfortably worrying … Apart from poor Kenton being savaged, which was right at the beginning, they’ve kept Markie in play with absolutely nothing - so it seems the whole point was to tie that plot in with George.

And now George is on the cusp of freedom; with his wonderful romance to look forward to; and his mother calm and confident and feeling proud of him; and …

I don’t think I could bear it …

Bruisername · 28/08/2025 11:35

The sw do have form for killing off characters with so much promise

TottersBlankly · 28/08/2025 12:21

… Leaving a legacy of deep sadness for decades afterwards.

They did an ominous “and so close to your release date” mention the other night so it seems more likely that he’ll end up in a fight and hurt someone else, landing him in there for another X years. Meanwhile Amber and Brad fall in love.

TottersBlankly · 28/08/2025 13:02

George pulling strings from prison for years to come could be an … interesting situation. Yes …

Dunno about Amber and Brad, but to put it crudely, having brought a potentially fertile womb into play, I’d be surprised if the SWs don’t bless Amber with a tiny instagram decoration. A union with Horrobins (in the face of George) would be pretty hectic for listeners. I’d rather she starts the next generation of Grundys, becomes incorporated into Grange Farm or Little Grange or No 1, The Green, and continues to enliven the clan - more or less harmoniously.

"Fission chips" was what I heard as a child; it puzzled me almost as much as "the Russian hour" did.

If only the children in TA were half as inventive about language as the ones we come across in real life: the ones who talk about the anti-podes, or alastin dogs, or other well-known child-errors; or who ask where the creases go when you are ironing a pillow-case and then, while you are still trying to work out how on earth to answer them, go on "do they go into the iron?" and then before you have time to answer that, ask "can I watch when you empty it?"

Bruisername · 28/08/2025 17:36

Just listening to PM and they’re interviewing a Somalian chap who is in the Epping hotel and I’m not sure it’s going the way they expected!!

I'm surprised the archers haven’t covered the migrant crisis - would be topical and ant that what Lawrence is there for?

TottersBlankly · 28/08/2025 18:11

It really was an interesting interview.

But in TA asylum seekers would be more likely to be housed in Meadow Rise, or cheap hotels in Borchester, rather than anywhere in Ambridge.
